Welcome aboard. Let's see some pics of your truck. Click Me (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6428.0)
As far as horsepower, you are way ahead of the game with a 454.
This isn't exactly a budget build, but compare these numbers to any crate in this price range:

The philoshophy behind performance tuning American V8's seems to be different from tuning import engines (though it shouldn't be). Ricer guys (at least the ones I know) tend to put too much stock in air filters, spark plugs, ignition wires, etc. These are not performance-enhancing items. You will see no serious gains from these things, UNLESS you are in need of a tune up. Then that would be the only place to start. Add distributor rebuild/replacement, ignition timing, carb rebuild/tuning to the list.
From there, a set of full length headers and a free flowing dual 2.5" (for stock-ish BBC) or 3" (for mild-performance BBC) exhaust would be the way I'd go. For best performance Dynomax UltraFlo or Magnaflow mufflers are a safe bet.
Happy with the performance yet? No? Then I'd seriously consider plucking that engine and going through the whole thing. You can see some gains by swapping intakes and cams with the engine in, but the best performance comes from looking at the engine as a system. Heads (flow, combustion efficiency, etc), static compression (matched to cam, fuel octane), cam (matched to heads, compression, displacement, intended usage)....the list goes on.

thats what i wanted to know thank you "eventhorizon66" i might dot he 3in exhuast cops in my area dont bother american made cars like harleys and chevys with loud exhaust.. but if its a honda or intagra then they'r al over..
hondas are nice couse you can do a 500 dollar integra swap in a 92 civic and you just doublted hp and not just that but you have light weight on you side so 230hp in a car that weight let then 2000 not to bad.. i wount stop fixing hondas but i love these chevys..
im looking to do the followings..
Intake filter:--------------whats a good brands for these parts..
Intake manifold:
headers:
lowering kit:
carburator:
maybe heads and cam:
i just did plugs and i used he acdelco 10s.... any good?
OIL? what oil is good for this motor?
whats good brands for those parts noted on to.. and what sould i ook fr when buying a carburator..?

Welcome from AZ nice project truck.
-
I personally like K&N, If you have a Q-jet, stick with it. I like edelbrock and lunati stuff, but that's me. This is your truck too, so make sure You like it!!! Oh, yea- Hookers headers for my exhaust opinion.
-
thank you guys for all your help..
i just did a 5dollar upgrade to my truck but it looks 100 times better. i will pst pictures soon we had alot of snow drop on us last night..
hooker is a good brand but how much do they differ from like flow tech brand..?
-
OK. i did a new intake Edelbrook and it the aftermarket one very nice. my question is there are two hoses that are 5/8 id guess. and they where going into the intake what do thise go to on the intake and there is also a vacum line going from a tee in the intake and then out again. ive lef it disconnected and ran it. i ran just fine but it revs a little higher..?
also did new plugs and wires, and new oil...
my new question is..
what tranny do i have withmy 454 engine...? its all stock so im wondering what this truck came with...
i was goin to do the tranny fluids also but they asked me if i had the 400 or the 700r4 tranny..?
any guess...?
-
Don't leave a vacuum line loose. If it idles higher that means you've created a vacuum leak. Fix it.
Looks at the pics on this page for radiator/heater hose routing (and also for inspiration ;D): http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=5723.135
Identify your trans by the shape of the pan:
http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=11124.0
It's probably a TH400 unless someone has swapped in something else.
-
thank you eventhorizon66. one more question. what the differance intransmissions..?
im sure its the longer and shorter gear ratio. if i want to towe cars with a car dolly but some time step on the gas and haul as. what tranny do i want. i wount be towing cars for long distance. every now and then in town.
and could you posible tell me best to worst trannys fromthe list you should me..?
-
The TH400 is a heavy duty 3 speed (ratios: 2.48, 1.48, 1.00). If you want strength and gas mileage is not terribly important, this is the one for you. It has no torque converter lockup.
There is also an electronic overdrive version of the TH400 called the 4L80E. It is still in use today in 3/4 and 1 ton GM trucks. In order to use this one you'll need an aftermarket trans controller or switch to full manual valve body (must always shift the trans yourself).
The TH700R4 is a lighter duty 4 speed (ratios: 3.06, 1.63, 1.00, 0.70). It offers improved gas mileage through overdrive and lockup torque converter. In stock form it is not a wise choice behind any big block, but it can be beefed up to live behind mild big blocks.
If the truck is just for towing/cruising/goofing off around town, the TH400 is the one you want.

ok guys the more i do the more i like this truck.. im loving it.. so not any time soon but if i wanted to swap a good 1/4 mile tranny short gear ratio.. what is the tranny i would want.. is the th400 the one i want to stick withif i was going abuse it for racing..
any pointers on how to race a auto chevy truck.. i mean i know some guy was telling meto put it in 1 drive and then switch to 2 drive then d drive..? havnt tried it but i was wondering..?
help.. help..!
