Title: No Front parking lights
Post by: BigBlue on December 20, 2009, 09:59:57 pm
Hi, I have done numerous searches and can't locate a solution to my issue so here goes: I'm working on a friend's 1980 k10. It came to me with no engine and now that I'm getting ready to give it back to him I noticed it does not have any front parking lights when the headlight switch is on. Both blinker lights in the dash come on with the headlight switch (indicating a bulb isn't working somewhere I believe). The rear taillights work fine. All blinkers, headlights, hazards and brake lights work fine. The bulbs in the front parking lights are good. All grounds check out good. I removed the firewall to fuse block connector on the firewall side. Everything looked good. I know the grounds are good for the parking lights since the blinkers in the front work fine but I cleaned them all anyway.

Does anyone have any suggestions where to go from here?  Thanks.

do the turn signals work with the headlight being on or off? i would also check the bulb to make sure its the right bulb it should have two contacts on it.

Yes, the turn signals work fine with the headlights ON and OFF.

Both bulbs are amber colored 1157 bulbs. I've used my dvom and check for continuity on each contact of the bulbs with the bulbs removed. I do not think I'm getting +12v to the parking light wire from the firewall connector.

Not sure what to look at next or where the parking light wire from the headlight switch connector splices into two wires, one for the rear taillights and one for the front parking lights.

I'm thinking I may have to pull the fuse block from under the dash but wanted to get some insight from anyone here before I did so.  Thanks!!

Are any of your marker lights blown?

The side marker lights on the fenders both work when the left and right turn signals are on. I believe these are single element bulbs right?

I have turn signals (side marker lights work as turn signals) with headlights ON and off.

With parking lights on, I only have rear parking lights and no front parking lights or side marker lights.

With headlights on, I only have rear parking lights and headlights but no front parking lights or side marker lights.

Trace the wires to the junction box on the fire wall, for power to the front running lights and check for power. I know you said you looked at it but just check it with a tester and see what you come up with. Then if that checks out test the a running light up front and see what it shows

Double check the ground connections on the front harness. Use a test light to verify b+ at each socket.

Yes. check those grounds again Big Blue. Take them apart and clean. Also, from a wiring schematic it looks like the b+ should be found at the blue wire and brown wire on the right hand parking light and also at the lt. blue and brown wires on the left hand parking light.  The brown wire runs between the two lights to tie them together.
It looks like the b+ voltage originates at the instrument cluster circuit board.

Okay, thanks for everyone's help. I think I may have made some progress today but still need some advice.

If i pull the both front 1157 bulbs, both fender marker lights come on with the parking lights engaged. I have triple checked all grounds, both blinkers work fine. I have checked and have +12v inside each 1157 connector on the parking light terminal (when using the battery as my ground on my dvom). HOwever, if I check for ground through the ground terminal in the 1157 connector I can not get one.

Is it possible both 1157 connectors are bad?

check the ohms between the socket and b- see what you get. is each socket grounded independently

Did that yesterday. First off, each socket is grounded together with all the other bulbs through a splice.

Using b-, I get 0.1 ohms when probing the socket ground wire just before the wire goes into the connector. Then if I check the actual metal terminal ground strip in the connector I get OL on both connectors. This leads me to believe both connectors have a bad ground connection internally.

It's not my truck and I don't know if these lights ever worked right. I'm repairing the truck for a friend and it had sat for a couple years. Thanks for all your help.

think ur right sounds like the ground is the problem in the socket. it is weird how both are bad

I'm curious to know what happens if you run a temporary wire from the splice to another ground to see if the parking lights come on..

GOOD NEWS! I replaced the driver 1157 socket connector (the parts store didn't have two connectors, will replace passenger side tonight), installed the bulb and the driver front parking light works perfectly!

I'm confident I'll get the same result with the passenger side tonight. I don't like to throw parts at things and appreciate everyone's advice!

I've never seen two connectors bad at once but anything's possible.

My theory on that is that one went bad say 2 years ago he never fixed it the other one went out two weeks ago so when you got to it, it seemed like both went out at the same time (time reference was to say they went out at two different times :) )

You know what the irony of this fix is?  The owner will never understand the frustration of the troubleshooting you did.

Amen to that.

Final update: Replaced the passenger side connector and everything works great now.
