Fellow square runners. I have an 87 c10 1/2 ton 2wd. I have a 385 fastburn 350 cid crate motor. A fresh 700R4 (from 88 camaro) with an adjustable lock up mudule. I like the transmission but looking for a little fun. I am going to put a 5 speed in it. I just want to do a little research and see what it will consist of. I know i will need the pedal assembly from a doner. It will be hydraulic so I figure on an aftermarket master cylinder. Someone posted that the driveshaft would work but it would still determine type of 5 speed. What is involved with linkage to hydraulics? What kind of mods involved? Recommended 5 speed transmission? Has anyone on here done this in a 2wd? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

If money is not a huge concern, there are tons of aftermarket companies that offer complete conversion kits. Have you looked into any of these?

your donor may have a hydro setup. you just need to run a brake line in betwen the clutch cylinder and slave cylinder then a hose to your resivour which you just hang on the firewall then bleed the system like you would brake lines. A t-5 would prob work nice for a tranny most likely out of an s-10 with a hydro set up then snag those parts too and maybe the driveshaft just in case. the hydro setup is not complicated at all the hardest part will be setting up your master to the clutch pedal once you get it hung. you need to make or modify the trans cross member and hopefully you can get by with your driveshaft with out too much effort, which is why you might want to grab the driveshaft out of whatever the trans is out of so you can match it to the splines if yours are differant, good luck.

Just an opinion but I would trick out the 700R4... There is no manual trans that's gonna out perform it.

Nobody can shift gears faster in manual than an automatic.......

I just joined and made the post here and I appreciate all the help and so responsive! All the information every one gave was great! I will check out the recommended sites for the conversions as I didnt come across those. The 700 is tricked out pretty good and I do like it. I dont really want to drag race with the truck but want an attention getter from red light to red light. I like to hear that rubber ripping as I snap the gears and really love to hear those super 40s rumble. You all know what I mean. I will try to post some pics of my truck as I am still building it. I dropped the 385 crate in it and just completed a MPFI system from Edlebrock. I still have some tunning to do on it but so far it is pretty impressive. The engine doesnt have the get-up like I expected but it is a heavy box to move. I am running 3.73 gears with a detroit locker in a 12 bolt rear. I hope I can help you guys as you have me. Thanks again for the support. I wish I would have joined when I started 5 years ago on this build.

Just out of curiousity, did you go with the Pro-Flo2 system or the new Pro-Flo XT? Got a pic?
-
Yes, it is the pro flow 2 and so far i like it. I do have some pics but it will be a while before i can post them. I am overseas at the moment. It is a victor jr. intake with fuel rails. You cant hardly tell its fuel injected once the air cleaner is in place. I am fixing to dyno the truck so I can get it precision tunned through out the entire power band. This is not needed but just my preference. Before hand i will upgrade my o2 sensor to the the wide band which will consist of 2 heated o2. then i will have one in each collector. This also will make the tunning more accurate. This is highly recommended. Catch with Edlebrock... they dont have a wide band upgrade but Accell has a plug and play system for it. I will get you some pics soon.

eventhorizon66 also if you go this route, the tech guys at Edlebrock are very good with troubleshooting. If the MAP supplied doesnt work for you they can take some engine info from you and send a MAP. They will walk you through everything. That helps if you are like me and not too computer smart. The maps are only going to get you ball park. You will have to tune then save your mods to the ECU.

Cool, waiting for those pics. I'm eventually gonna go EFI someday. Just not sure how I want to do it...so many options.

Has anyone put a 5 speed from an 88 or newer full size chevy in an 87 and earlier truck?
What is the difference between the s10 5 speeds and the full size. The comment has been made about the 5s from the s10. Is it beause of the length and fitment? I am all for it if it will work with less mods. I will stock up on a few of them. Can they be gone into and beefed up? Will all of the hydraulic components work? Are the trannies the same length?
Kiesler TKO 5 speed route is about $4,200 plus shipping, cross member mods, drive shaft mods, and a donor pedel assembly. Lot of work and lot of money.

The ones in the Fullsize trucks are built a little stronger than the S10 versions. Their dimensions are the same as far as length and mounting. Compared to a TKO they are weak. If you are just doing normal driving as you would on a fullsize 88-up, you are fine.

I would think if this is a matter of fun, just any 5 speed swap won't do. Consider the gear spread, shift throws, shift feel, clutch feel, etc. I imagine you'd be pretty disappointed with a 5-sp from a later work truck.
