Happy 2010! Boy time rolls on. I graduated college in 1990....that's 20 years come May. Wow! It seems like just a few years, not 20.
Time goes by quickly. A note to all you young guys, make the most of every minute. Set goals and work towards them and don't let anyone tell you you can't reach them or they are not practical. Before you know it, 20 years will have passed and you can either look back with pride or look back and say "I wish I would have....". Go out and do it!
I have postponed some fun over the years in the name of a career and working for an early retirement, though that is still 7.5 yrs away, but, with each click of the yearly digits, it is gettin' closer. I'll be able to then have that fun and enjoy my hobbies that much more and cannot wait. My son just turned 5 and it seemed like yesterday when he was born. www.AndrewDelbridge.com But, when he is 12, dad will be able to spend a lot of time with him turning wrenches and building his Chevy Truck between camping expeditions and reeling in the big fish from the Chesapeake Bay. And, oh, the Appalachian Trail is still calling my name--all 2600 miles of it.
It seems every new year, I re-evaluate if I am on target for my long-term goals and make any adjustments. I have a great family, house and great job. I am fortunate to work Mon-Fri, but, should I in 2010 finally put in for Lieutenant? I haven't in 10 yrs now. Do I want to retire as a Captain? Or, is remaining Sgt good enough? Is my relationship with my wife as healthy as it can be? Time to evaluate these types of things in the new year and adjust as necessary.
New Year's Day is not just another day. Use it to your advantage. Now is the time to grab that steering wheel and make sure you pick the road that leads you where you want it to.
