i have been talking to a guy that has a 93 gmc 4x4 6.2 diesel, all it needs for a sticker is a water pump (he already has a new one) and the donut gasket leaks. it has a 4" magnaflow exhaust, new brake and fuel lines, new gas tank and sending unit, and he repaired the rockers...it has 150,000 miles and the injection pump was changed 20,000 miles ago and he said it runs and drives great...i wanted to know if you guys think it would be worth trading my truck for....ill try to post pics when he sends me some
-
depends on what it looks like and what you want.
-
well ive never had a diesel before and i didnt know if there are any problems with the 6.2 and if theres anything i should look out for before i trade
-
Generally speaking if it is running it should be fine. After 1987 the major problems with them were fixed.
-
alright thanks...so you think it would be worth trading?
-
Same as with any truck up here. Check frame, brake lines, cab corners, rockers, floor boards, etc. Before I decided to fix my truck, I had looked for vehicles up to late 90's, a bunch were as bad or worse than my '73. Don't forget, there is a reason he wants to get rid of his truck.
-
ya ill deffinetly check that stuff. he just changed the brake lines, fuel tank and sending unit, so i dont have to worry about those...he told me he has 3 diesels and he doesnt use this one anymore so he wants to sell/trade it, and he wants to trade for my truck because he wants to rebuild his 78 gmc...so if we trade ill be keeping the engine in my truck and rebuild it with the engine parts i already have, then sell the engine for a profit...probably be able to get atleasst $500 for it
-
are the crankshafts weak in these engines? because ive heard that they easily break or crack if you rev it up when its cold
-
No, it is generally cause by worn dampners on old engines. It is said the 88-93 versions updated.
-
alright good...are these diesels fast like the the newer diesels (duramax, cummins, powerstroke)?
-
DEFINITELY not. they were for MPG's not power. The Duramax was designed to compete with the Powerstroke/Cummins.
-
so does that mean that theyre slow or that theyre just not as fast as duramax
-
The 93 6.2L puts out 143 hp / 257 lb·ft. This will have less power than a 93 350 Gas motor with 210hp. But gas mileage will be higher.
-
Much higher mileage, my father in law is a mechanic at a lime and rock plant owned by certainteed, he LOVES the 6.2/6.5 diesel, mainly because of its mileage and long term reliability. He has an '89 with a 6.2 and 700r4 that gets mid-upper 20's mpg with 250k+ miles, and a 96? i think with a 6.5 that does a little worse mileage wise, but has a load more power. Course, he also has very little appreciation for any cummins short of the qsk 19-700. He also likes the power output of the powerstroke in the 1 ton ford van they have, but he hates the reliability or lack there of, as he usually puts it. Hes real impressed with the volkswagen jetta TDI they just bought awhile back..I was real impressed with it when i got to ride in it. 50+ mpg at 80+ mph.
-
ya its a 92 not 93...sorry i thought it was a 93, i think for performance wise from best to worst it goes duramax, cummins, then powerstroke and from sound i think it goes cummins,duramax,powerstroke....ford has to put twin turbos on their engines while duramax and cummins only have one and powerstoke still has less power then duramax and cummins....i would love to have an 06 gmc 2500hd 6.6L duramax with the allison tranny
-
so i went and looked at the truck today...it starts and runs fine, sounds good, probably the worst part is the passengers rocker panel, its not bad so i can put bondo on it and call it good but the problem is that this weekend is going to be about 0 degrees so itd be kinda hard to to that especially when i dont have heat in our garage. if i trade it would be this weekend that way i could fix the stuff over the weekend and get it stickered and registrated on monday...it needs the water pump but a new one is included, so i was wondering if you guys think i should trade
-
If your runs and doesn't need work, I say no. But I am not sure why you are wanting to trade yet. To get a 4x4?
Oh, and are you getting cash in addition on this trade? What do you mean by "stickered"
-
i want to trade because i want 4x4 and its newer, better on gas, and just because its a diesel...because i have always wanted a diesel, my truck runs but it can use some work, a little bit of body work and some other stuff...no im not getting any cash in the trade and i mean stickered as in inspection sticker
-
Safety inspection?
I would say if it looks like something you want and it has want you desire. I would get it.
With a diesel you can expect about 22mpgs on the city even on the 4x4.

He better unload that really quick, VW is having alot of problems with the fuel systems in those cars and its a ton of money to fix em and VW isn't covering it under warrenties.

it pretty much is what im looking for...i would rather have a duramax but its gonna be a long time before i get one of those and i just want to make sure itd be worth it because this is going to be my daily driver
-
If it has been taken care of I think you will like it.
-
i dont know about the previous owner but this guy that has it now didnt abuse it because he doesnt even use it (he has 3 other diesels)...and the engine was changed and it only has about 126k miles which is nothing for a diesel
-
so i did the trade and the guy brought the truck over today....here are some pics
-
are diesels 12 volt or 24 volt?
-
Generally 24 v. Truck looks good! How many batteries does it have?

Generally 24 v. Truck looks good! How many batteries does it have?
it has 2 just like every other diesel so thats why i was wondering if it was 12 or 24 volt
-
I'm almost 100% it's a 24
-
It is 12Volt. Only Military trucks were 24V.
-
Yep, 12v system. As mentioned, 24v was only for military trucks. There are two batteries but due to the way they are connected (pos to pos, neg to neg), they boost the amps and leave the voltage the same.
But, if they were wired where one pos was connected to the other neg, and then the other pos to starter and the other neg to ground, then it would be 24V with the same amount of amps.
Say two 900 amp batteries were wired together pos to neg for 24 volts, they would put out 900 amps at 24v where as two 900 amp batteries wired pos to pos and neg to neg would put out 1800 amps at 12v.
-
Huh. That's pretty interesting. Thanks for the info!
-
ok thanks...and what about the gas? the owners manual says to push it to the floor and let go before you start it
