quick question. if i wanted to plug my egr valve which side of the vaccum line do i plug, the valve end or the solenoid end? 305 TBI by the way.

well i'm getting at wit's end here. it won't idle smooth which i know could be a lot of things besides that. but it has new plugs, wires, cap and rotor, new egr valve and solenoid, new iac, new tps, new fp regulator, new tbi gasket. sometimes it will idle smooth and then sometimes it won't.

so plug it going from the solenoid to the actual valve, in other words the valve itself shouldn't have nothing on it then.

Yes and if the problem goes away replace the EGR.  I actually lost 1.5 mpg without running with it on a 1982 I had a while back.

Don't know if this will help or not, but I was having a similar problem with mine.  There were many suggestions given in this post http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=13459.msg107697#msg107697

Before I discovered the blown head gasket, I had a bad TPS Sensor that was causing it to idle rough and figuring it out was driving me crazy as well.  Checking the voltage on that sensor is fairly easy.  This is the first non-carbed truck I've owned, so when all the 'normal' things don't work, I have been thankful for this board.

it idles fine when you first start it up in the morning then when it warms up and you drive it around for awhile and stop it's not smooth. it acts real funny when you put it in reverse and use your brakes, the idle will go way down like it wont's to die and then it picks back up. the brakes seem to make it worse. it will do it in park after it warms up, just let it sit there for a minute and it'll start idling funny. again i've done randomly replaced several things and it's starting to get aggravating. thanks for the replies btw. ;D

It does sound like a sticking EGR. Let us know what happens when you bypass it.

i'm gonna try it. one more thing, that charcoal canister down there by the radiator i took it off years ago and connected the line from the tank to the purge line. could that have an effect on anything?

really!!! ah heck i've had it like that for long time. that may be why it runs the way it does. :o i'll have to go out there and undo it. plug the purge line on the tbi and leave the tank line open so it'll vent, right?

NO or you will have a fuel leak. When pressure builds in the tank fuel may come pouring out. Just plug it for now and next time you're at the boneyard pick up a new cannister.

it wasn't nothing wrong with the one it had i tried to break into it and ended up busting it. but i can get one to put back on it. thanks for the heads up.

i plugged it and i think that helped it. i drove it till it warmed up to operating temperture and put it in drive and then pushed the e brake and got out looked under the hood and it idled pretty smooth under load. i think i'll just leave it plugged. but i still can't figure out why that thing won't do right, the valve is new and so is the solenoid and that's all you can replace on that.
