Title: 5.3/4l60e swap into my 1981 C10 Stepside
Post by: nucknoel89 on January 24, 2010, 05:32:40 pm
Hey all, I've been on these forums for a while but I don't know if I've ever made a post to just show off my truck.   I got it free several years ago, running.  It was technically a one-owner truck, the guy gave it to his nephew because he thought his nephew wanted it, but he didn't.  My dad is one of this guy's coffee buddies, and the guy signed it over to me for free.  The original owner (the guy's uncle) just made contact recently with the guy, who made contact with my dad because he now would like a picture of it.  Since I was shooting some pics, I figured I'd share.
When I got it, the driver door and fender were nearly disintegrated (curse these Canadian winters).  I bought new reproduction pieces, but eventually found an original GM door in the boneyard.  The door wasn't black, so I spraypainted it, and that snowballed into the racing stripes and the 01 on the door.  The stepside fenders were both dinged and rusty, one I have replaced, one I have not.  I've got new rockers and cab corners waiting to be put on.  Engine is not original.  It had a 305 with a 2 barrel carb but I seized it.  Right now it has another 305 out of a Monte Carlo with a 4 barrel carb.  It's not an outstanding engine but it will get me around till I can afford a better one.  Inside I have a Grant steering wheel and a DVD player, as well as some aftermarked volt, oil, and temp gauges.  I also have a Dixie (General Lee) horn.
Future plans:
-Fuel Injected vortec or a duramax
-Dark Blue with the racing stripes and 01, but done better
-Shaved handles, suicide doors
-Bagged on 22s
-Rollpan with some kind of custom tail lights
-Tonneau cover
I would really like to find a newer wrecked truck with the vortec or duramax and then put my body on the frame and then the engine would already be mounted and I could use the ABS and other features.  Then I'd also like to use the gauge cluster and steering column and make a custom dash

Post by: nucknoel89 on September 14, 2010, 12:28:48 pm
Well I finally picked up my engine today, bought it from down in the USA.  It's from an 03 Silverado, 110,536 miles/177,890 kilometers.  I still have to get a 4l60e, hopefully this weekend and then I can start taking out the 305.  I've read several people's swap threads and I hope that by the time I'm done this thread can be useful to others.  I'm gonna try to keep this thread running simultaneously between 73-87chevytrucks.com and fullsizechevy.com.  Anyway, here it is in all it's 5.3 liters of glory:
And the truck it's going into:

Hopefully everything goes smoothly!

Anyone have a schematic of the wiring harness?  I already found the ECM wiring for these in another thread but I was hoping there was also one for the part that plugs into the fusebox.

Yeah, for the 03.  I need to figure out what I have to tie into my current harness.  Other option might be to get a fuse block that matches the engine and then tie the rest of my truck wiring into the new harness.  What would you guys recommend?

What's your plans for the motor and the truck?  Cam swap? Bolt ons?  Planning to race or anything?

I know Nelson Perfomance and a few others can tie the 5.3L harness into your stock truck harness, but I forgot the price.  I can't remember the other places that do it, but there are a bunch.

Probably a cam swap down the road.  It's my daily driver though and I need all the smog stuff cause we have emissions testing here in B.C.

I don't have one for that year, but you can get a tech at the dealership to print the schematics out.  I got a Painless harness for mine.

Is there some sort of trick to getting the dipstick tube out?  It seems stuck in there and I can't get the exhaust manifold totally free without removing the dipstick tube.

Cool!  Looks like you are moving right along. I have one little suggestion to add to the mix....... I have been replacing quite a few intake gaskets on these motors for vacuum leak issues/rough idle lately. You may want to slip a new set in while it's out in front of you?

Thanks for the info.  I'll probably get that replaced before the front end is back on.  And for everyone, a few questions.  First, where does the brake booster connect?  Second, for the wiring, would it work to split the power from the starter between the 2 fuse blocks?  Like run the engine off the 03 and all my other non-engine stuff off my original?  And about fuel; I can get the lines off an 03 at the wrecker, what kind of adapters do I need?  I have the sender and pump from a 91 Blazer.  And with the sender, there's 3 small tubes on top which I assume are send, return, and evap, but there's also a fourth tube that's much bigger.  What is it?

No pics at the moment but I put my ECU where my charcoal canister was.  I bent the bracket to fit around it and then ziptied the ends of the bracket.

Return, supply, evap and the big one is the vent tube.
to attach the lines you need an adapter fitting.  I got my from http://www.purechoicemotorsports.com/

The last two LS motors I worked with had stuck dipsticks.  I ended up breaking off the tab that holds them on.  Couldn't figure out any other way.

Is there anything special I need to make my gauges work with this engine/tranny?  I have a cluster from a 91 fullsize blazer.  Also, there's a hole in the tailshaft of the tranny, is that where a speed sensor goes?
Title: Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into my 1981 C10 Stepside
Post by: Captkaos on September 29, 2010, 04:12:49 pm
you need to make sure the signal from the speedo or one from the trans matches what the ECM is looking for.

The 4L60E should have a VSS.

For water temp, you can drill and tap into the water pump, for oil pressure you'd use the normal stuff along with a metric adapter(I'll look up the part#/size). I don't know about the speedo though.

Okay so I'm wiring up my fuel pump. The sender is from a 91 fullsize Blazer.  There's a purple wire and a grey wire.  Which is which?

purple is power. grey is ground.  Should be in a weather pack.
If you are holding the sender you should be able to see where it goes..

Quick question about transmission cooler lines.  Do I need hard lines all the way through or can I just use the ends and run like stainless braided hose or something?
Title: Re: 5.3/4l60e swap into my 1981 C10 Stepside
Post by: Grim 82 on October 05, 2010, 01:40:13 pm
You can buy trans cooler hose. When I made mine I bent new 5/16" (IIRC) steel line and bent it to reach from the trans to the frame rail and then sleeved about 8" of rubber line over the steel line and used 2 hose clamps at each connection. So all of the middle is the special trans cooler hose. You will probably have to reuse some of your line or just bend new steel line, because the hose can't make a very tight radius without kinking.

you "can" run hose, but I would use braided if you do.
Otherwise I would run hard lines.

drive it for awhile and throw the most basic cam in it.

look for a z06 cam and springs to come up used, i see em every once in awhile for 150 down here, (of course now that i want one noones selling...dang vette owners)

they add a decent amount of power and the 5.3 wakes the heck up with a cam. in keeping the truck manifold your powerband stays torque oriented just in case you need to run it past a significant other.... (honey, ill finally be able to haul that oak dresser home from the antique store....)

150 bucks to put an extra 20 or so horse on the pavement is a -_- deal.

oh and swap to the arp balancer bolt as a safeguard if you do. theyre like 29 bucks or so. the factory gm one is "reusable" but it only takes one time of having the bolt backing out on they dyno under load to see that they can be an issue. ask me how i know.

Okay, so I'm planning on using 91 Blazer temp and oil sensors (to go with the 91 Blazer cluster).  I'm waiting to get the oil sensor but got the temp sensor and it's 2 prong.  One is big and one is small.  Which one goes to the cluster?

Got it running, it seems to be idling kinda high, though I haven't run it for longer than a minute. About the oil pressure sensor, I heard you can just use the stock 5.3 sensor. Where do I tap into it?

Tried to put the trans in gear, it's not engaging.  It has fluid, the plug in the back is connected, and I put in the relay.  Any ideas?  Does it make a difference that the engine was originally mated to a 4 wheel drive transmission?

Think the probelm may be the relay to the transmission?  I think I have it connected to the right wire to the trans but I think I wired the relay itself wrong.  From what I've been reading I need some sort of brake signal for the lockup and I don't have anything like that connected to it so maybe that's why it's not engaging.  It's at the muffler shop right now so I can't do anything with it at the moment.

Still workin on the trans but I have a question about the O2s.  Ditched the rears but how do the fronts hook up?  There's only 2 plugs total on the wring looms that look like they'd be the O2s.  One goes further back (rear O2s?) and the other one is closer to the front (front O2s?).  So then that would mean I only have one plug for the front sensors?  And both the plug on the loom and the ones in the pipes are male connectors?  Did they change them over the years?  The pipes/sensors were't the ones that were originally on the engine but I'm pretty sure they're all from the same year truck.

Found the correct sensors at the wrecker.  I guess in 03 they used more than one type of O2 sensor.

I think I posted earlier that I was having problems with the tranny not engaging.  Had a transmission guy look at my truck, he said there's something wrong with the pump or manual valve, looks like I'm gonna go back to the wrecker and get a different transmission.
