Title: Lowered my SWB this past weekend
Post by: modular93fox on February 02, 2010, 09:15:45 pm
Used McGaughys front lowering spindles, McGaughys drop shackles and suburban hangers. Factory Rally wheels with no spacers. Im probally going to remove one spring from the spring pack to make the fender to wheel space even front to back. More eye appealing to me..

Hopefully tomarrow I can update this picture with the trucks new shoes.

I like that stance and the Punisher sticker in the window.  What's different about suburban hangers?

While spending many hours at the junk yard in my day, I noticed no one sells drop hangers for the suburbans... so im like well let me just see what they look like... They look identical to the drop hangers you can buy for 200 something bucks... I wanted to try it and they pair only costed 40 bucks. Basically just reuse one hole, top rear most hole. the hole directly below that one, needs to be opened up a bit then insert a bolt and sung everything up. the other 2 bolts need to be redrilled. take your time and there ya go. drop hangers for the cheap.
heres a picture with the burban hangers installed and the stock truck hangers sitting on the leaf spring.

Hopefully next weekend if weather permits hopefully i can mount the calipers for the rear brakes... ive got the rotor drilled for 5x5... massive 13.8" rotors with parking brake. thats gona be another post once I make more progress.

I hope you checked your pinion angle

You know i didnt check it... I will now that you mention it... I happen to have a pair of shims if I need them. Im going to take a leaf spring out this weekend to make the truck dead nuts level (according to fender to tire gap). Im probally going to use my Eastwood fender roller in the front just incase.. dont need to chew up any tires if I can help it.

Heres a night shot (obviously) of the new look .... dirty truck + new wheels + unshined tires ... lol.. looks like i have something else to do tomarrow...

Thanks for posting that pic of the hangers. I saw a set recently and wondered if they'd work.
Trucks looks good, very clean and straight.

No one makes drop hangers for Suburbans because of the way they mount to the frame, and the frame design is different than a pickup.  I would definitely check your pinion angle.

Pinion angle looked fine to start with... however once I removed the overload spring.. man  whata can of worms that turned into... i didnt have a C-clamp and the center pin bolt didnt have enough threads.. gay.
long story short, limped it home and went to 4wheel parts to pick up a set of grade 8 center pins and shortened it to size. Perfect he says.. :) I also added 2 washers to the "round head" side so it will allow more head to fit into the spring perch once the 2.5* shim is installed. Without the extra washers it seemed like it didnt go into the perch that far.. it does now :) anyway the angle looks perfect by eye. Its not 100% level but its within a finger.... front has 3 and rear has 4..

,Where did you get the HIDs and how much did they cost?

Care to elaborate on this set up? You have my attention..:)

basically its 13.8" vented rotors with single piston calipers. parking brake is inside the rotor. Very similar to the LS1/Corvette stuff but the rotors bigger :) and the parking brake shoes / parts WAY cheaper than LS1/Corvette... way.

Im trying to lay the bracket out in AutoCad but for someone whos self taught and has no friends that know how to do 3d... its slow and frustrating. My goal is to send this file to a metal fab shop that has the ability to cut out the flat pattern and then throw the plate into a metal brake and presto, solid, sturdy bracket! Once the caliper is mounted and all is good, I will tackle affixing the parking brake shoes to the plate. Right now I dont have back brakes because Im constantly trying to work on getting all of the measurements I think I need and saves me time removing the backing plate and messing with the rear brakes...
With the wheels I have on now, these rotors and calipers fills the void like a CHAMP. Once I finish the rears, or atleast have the calipers mounted and operating I will be working on the fronts :)

,Where did you get the HIDs and how much did they cost?

total cost was about 120 ish.
100 bucks for the hid bulb kit
20 bucks for a pair of brand new headlights from autozone
and about 4 or more hours of figuring out how to make the projectors in the headlight.

heres a link to the thread I started on another forum
http://www.fullsizechevy.com/showthread.php?366197-hid-headlight-upgrade..-in-the-works (http://www.fullsizechevy.com/showthread.php?366197-hid-headlight-upgrade..-in-the-works)

basically had some 4" exhaust tubing and turned it into an oval shape, made it fit the contours of the headlamp on one side and the projector flange on the other. added some studs to the projector side, and spot welded the tube to the headlight bucket. put buytl tape  around all of the seams to water proof it... works great, almost a year to the day.

Im not sure if anything but '90 subruban head lights have a metal housing on the actual headlight. I think all others are glass... if so you would have to buy the 40$ each aftermarket plastic ones and then chop those up..
