Title: Truck dies
Post by: choptop on February 10, 2010, 10:26:48 pm
Hey guys, I hate to bother you with this, but Im having issues with my heavy hauler, but its not a square body. I cant find any info elsewhere, so I figured if anyone would have any ideas, it would be here. Its an 01 C3500HD crewcab with the 8.1l engine. What its doing is randomly dying. No codes, no warnings, just dies. I can turn off the ignition, wait a few seconds, and it will start right up. It may run another week without doing it, or in may not last 5 miles. Its very random. Ive had issues with the 8.1 in a previous 01 I had, but it would at least log a code for a few minutes, then it would go away after it restarted. Turned out to be a crank position sensor but only the factory diagnoatic reader would pick it up, and then it only showed past events. Replace the sensor, and never had another issue. On this one, I cant even get a code, check engine light never comes on, and it wont do it long enough to determine if Im losing spark or fuel. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I assume nothing else happens when it dies?  You don't lose power to the radio or dash lights etc.?  My father in law had something similar and it ended up being the fusebox clip making a bad connection on the ecm fuse.  He took his fuses out one by one and cleaned the terminals and bent the connectors slightly tighter.  That solved it.

The engine light doesn't come on for the bulb check either? Did you have the crank sensor recall done yet?

Subject:
Product Safety - Crankshaft Position Sensor Engine Stall
# 06083 - (12/11/2007)

Models:
2001 Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban
2001 GMC Sierra, Yukon XL

Equipped with 8.1L V8 (RPO L18 - VIN G) Engine

Condition

General Motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2001 model year Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban; GMC Sierra and Yukon XL model vehicles, equipped with an 8.1L V8 (RPO L18 - VIN G) engine. Some of these vehicles have a condition in which the crankshaft position sensor can fail intermittently or permanently. If the sensor fails intermittently, the Service Engine Soon (SES) light may illuminate and the vehicle may run rough. In addition, the engine may stall, and if so, may re-start immediately or after a cool down period. If the sensor fails permanently, the engine will quit running and will not re-start.

Correction

Dealers are to replace the crankshaft position sensor.

Vehicles Involved

Involved are certain 2001 model year Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban; GMC Sierra and Yukon XL model vehicles, equipped with an 8.1L V8 (RPO L18 - VIN G) engine and built within the VIN breakpoints shown.

IMPORTANT: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the GM Vehicle Inquiry System (GMVIS). Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.

For dealers with involved vehicle, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided through the applicable system listed below. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.

-- US GM - GM DealerWorld Recall Information

-- Canadian GM dealers - GMinfoNet Recall Reports

The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several states/provinces/countries. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.

Parts Information

Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Service and Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Service Procedure

Refer to appropriate SI Service Procedure and replace the Engine Crankshaft Position Sensor.

Customer Reimbursement - For GM US

All customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs for the recall condition will be handled by the Customer Assistance Center, not by dealers.

IMPORTANT: (For GM US Only) Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 6.1.12, for specific procedures reguarding customer reimbursement.

Customer Reimbursement - For Canada and Export

Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs for the recall condition are to be submitted to the dealer by December 31, 2008.

All reasonable customer paid receipts should be considered for reimbursement. The amount to be reimbursed will be limited to the amount the repair would have cost if completed by an authorized General Motors dealer.

When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:

^ Proof of ownership at time of repair.

^ Original paid receipt confirming the amount of repair expense(s) that were not reimbursed, a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.

Claims for customer reimbursement on previously paid repairs are to be submitted as required by WINS.

IMPORTANT: Refer to the GM Service Policies and Procedures Manual, section 6.1.12, for specific procedures regarding customer reimbursement verification.

Claim Information

Submit a Product Recall Claim with the information shown.

Customer Notification - For U.S. and Canada

General Motors will notify customers of this recall on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter shown in this bulletin).

Customer Notification - For Export

Letters will be sent to known owners of record located within areas covered by the US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For owners outside these areas, dealers should notify customers using the sample letter.

Dealer Recall Responsibility - For US and Export (US States, territories, and Possessions)

The US National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act provides that each vehicle that is subject to a recall of this type must be adequately repaired within a reasonable time after the customer has tendered it for repair. A failure to repair within sixty days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair within a reasonable time. If the condition is not adequately repaired within a reasonable time, the customer may be entitled to an identical or reasonably equivalent vehicle at no charge or to a refund of the purchase price less a reasonable allowance for depreciation. To avoid having to provide these burdensome remedies, every effort must be made to promptly schedule an appointment with each customer and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. In the recall notification letters, customers are told how to contact the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration if the recall is not completed within a reasonable time.

Dealer Recall Responsibility - All

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this recall bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is shown in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this recall enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, ,you must take the steps necessary to be sure the recall correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Thanks guys. When it dies, the only thing that shuts off is the engine. Nothing else changes.

Vile, I appreciate your reply. The check engine light does work for the bulb test, but thats the only time I see it. I didnt know about the recal, but I will be following up on it now. Thanks again guys, you are lots of help

my first thought was crank sensor.  my wife's cherokee did that frequently. It would just die at an intersection or driving slowly.  Turned out the crank sensor was faulty, telling the fuel pump to stop pumping.  it's like it was in an accident, when the engine stops, the gas stops, preventing a catastrophe.

since Vile discovered there was a recall for that, I'd definately check that.

I have changed a million cranksensors in these trucks.

It's really really fun to get to.   ;)

Just pray it doesn't break.  You have to remove the crank to get at it from the bottom.

It looks like I'll be doing it myself. The dealer said there wasnt a current recall for my truck.
Where is it located? I cant find a service manual for this truck, but I have heard you have to remove the starter.

It's located on the very back of the engine near the bellhousing.  Just slightly towards the driver's side.
