you might want to think about the ratio of it a 1 ton might have some high numbers might not be good for a dd

go for it! If thats what you want to do, then do it. I wouldnt worry about the gear ratios, that can easily be overcome by larger tires, which you were probably thinking anyway. This way you dont have to worry about changing the gears when you put the larger tires on.

Definitely GOLD!

Any sentence with the words 4x4, 1-ton and 'next to nuthin' is a winner!

Lucky, don't take this as a "dig" (as in, I'm setting you up for one...) but looking at that truck is like going shopping at my local Walmart - I feel pretty good about myself afterward.  I look at all of the nice shiny trucks some guys on this forum have and I start feeling pretty down about the condition of my project.  Then I look at what some other guys are wrenching on and it gives me the motivation to soldier on and get my boy's truck running again.  Good luck with it.  The price was right, I sold a set of 3/4 ton axles for more than what you paid for it.

And that's another thing I like about this site - no matter the condition of your "pride and joy", there's lots of folks cheering you on.

heck I didn't think of the dana 60 I was trying to buy just the front axle and the guys want 700+ for a basic one. good deal besides its not what other people think just what you think. just think about some tool you see driving a vett and thinking he's  all that but its just a car can he haul anything in it, when was the last time you saw one hauling a trailer lol.

What does it take to convert a 3/4 to a 1 ton?
Perhaps at some point a previous owner upgraded suspension and leaf springs?
Just a thought.

One tons have a totally different frame. Also have a dana 60 front axle.

Post by: 79k30guy on February 28, 2010, 10:25:53 pm
how is the frame totally different?   ???
Title: Re: Junk or gold?
Post by: 1984k30 on February 28, 2010, 10:40:29 pm
I think they are something like .030 thicker and where the frame goes under the cab it is around 2 inches higher.  I still am not sure if they are different than a 3/4 or not though.  I have been told they are the same as 3/4 and not same.  Maybe someone with a 3/4 could tell us how tall their frame rail is.  Also 1 tons rear shocks are located inside the frame.

now don't quote me on this but i had a 3/4 ton frame well 2 of them both were the same size and they both were as thick as my 1/2 ton about 6" don't know if thats light duty or what but i saw a 1 ton that was like 8" or something. not sure about cab part tho never saw anthing that stood out

All you have to do is move the rear spring hanger to switch from one to the other. Grind off the rivits, clean them up and reattach them using grade 8 hardware.
