Title: need help w/ vin plate location.
Post by: manimal on February 17, 2010, 11:32:56 pm
I have a friend that wants to sell me a 1973 crewcab 3/4t 2wd. It has been repainted and the vin tag removed for paint by the owner before him. I am not sure "where" this thing goes. I am needing a pic of how/where the vin tag is located on a 73-77(preferably '73) crewcab. I want to use the body one my dually crewcab. Thanks for any help.

The tag goes on the drivers door jam near the striker bolt. The vin will also be stamped on the frame near the steering box. The sticker in the glove box will also have the vin.

it's not illegal to reattach it due to restoring it but just to fraud lol. but i think the proper way is to have a state trooper come out and inspect it before and after its removed

That sounds about right.
Don't forget to use stainless rivets and file the heads to give that nice rosebud look before you pop them.

They don't have the look I remember.

I thought the outside edge of the ones on my 79 were kinda flower shaped.

Those are under hood trim tag rivets.Nobody makes vin tag rivets. If someone does let me know.I knew a guy working for GM that used to sell them for $25 apiece. It is illegal in any way to remove a vin tag.I had a friend remove his and reinstall it on a new cab he bought without a title. One time he was pulled over and his truck was confiscated and he went to jail.Anyone who says they don't look at these old trucks is full of it.

He went to jail? lol, It's also illegal to speed, to pee in public, to roll through a stop sign... etc so please people, start obeying the LAW. If you're repairing your cab and remove your vin plate & reinstall it and you are really worried about going to jail then I would recommend against removing it so you don't have to live in fear. I've never had a cop look at my vin nor would they know even where to look on one of these trucks if they did imo. My friend put BMW tags and wheels on his Honda Accord. His mother got pulled over and the cop was giving her a hard time about driving a BMW with Honda plates  ;D It never even occurred to him to check the vin until she told him too. Again if you're paranoid about the vin plate pop rivet cops I'd advise not removing it then.

I could be in worse trouble.
I actually sold the truck I changed cabs on. :o :o

it bot illegal to restore your cab and remove the vin. it is illegal to try to fraud the mva by switching the vin. but the reason that one guys mom didn't get in trouble is cause she didn't do it nor did know about it. about selling the truck after switching cabs its ok but what they want you to do is register both vins as a modded vehicle. but that's true with just switching axles but none do it nor do they care about that

I drove a truck with a vin off of my wrecked truck that I purchased from a dead man's relative. Should I report myself? Lol

If you want it to look correct the best way is to epoxy the plate on;cut the rivet heads off another plate with a sharp wood chisel and then epoxy them in place.....

Or grind them off from the bottom and expoxy all of it down.

Well, I am not the one that removed it.I have been contemplating buying the truck and using the body on my '79 chassis. Then using all the interior from the '79 also, 'cause it's in good shape. If I have the vin's/titles to BOTH trucks, should that create a problem? Are there any other places the #'s are stamped on the body?I think I am getting too paranoid about this......

All you have to worry about is the vin on the dash. Have the tittle to that and your good
