Hey guys had a question, whats a good aftermarket Stereo/radio to put in a 73 chevy truck that would fit in the dash? I am looking to not spend a bunch of money but would like one with either a cd player or one that even has a port for an mp3 player. If anyone had any ideas that would be great, thanks.

I used a panosonic sold for 18 wheelers in my '80. has a acc plug. The stereos for big trucks are built a little better. I just installed an alpine cd deck from best buy in my work truck and it has the acc plug and a usb port which i like a little better than the panasonic. I'd probably go with the alpine if I were to it again. Both were under 150. You will have to cut the dash to fit a cd deck though.

I am all into the stock look. I bought this off an ebay vendor that installs the jacks that overides the radio and you plug your ipod into. I got mine for $125. Good enough for my taste in my old truck.

Here is a bit larger pic without the patch cord. This guy will convert a radio as well if you have one.
-
If you want to keep the stock radio you could also just add an fm transmitter.

Hey Zeig85, I bought one of those from that guy on Ebay. Works great and what a nice guy!

I have not installed mine yet due to the cold and not feeling the energy to do it. I have the factory wiring harness and speakers for all corners but my truck originally was radio delete but I installed the single mono speaker in the dash with the non-stereo am-fm

Who will sell that for 125$ on ebay? Also how many watts/channels? and does it have a pre amp output? Please don't give me.....for asking these questions if they seem stupid?

It is just a stock OEM radio with the radio signal interrupted once you plug something into the jack.

Someone had actually cut my radio location for a newer style so i had to fab a piece with two holes for the knobs. I just wanted the factory look. The kind of radios with removable face just don't look right. These are OEM so no outs for amps. These old units had good sound, but no, you're not gonna "thump" going down the road. I didn't have the original wiring harness, which actually has three plugs, one for power, one for front speakers and one for back, but he included the harnesses for me and even labeled them.

Ok thx, for your help, I do need something with preamp outputs though.

I would also look for something with a mid-range control. It will help you adjust the sound given the amount of metal and speaker location in the cab.

I left the factory AM radio in my 80 . But I had a stereo console from my old 90 mazda tonka toy that I scrapped last year . Bolted it to the floor and painted it black . Doesn't look pretty but it works and it holds my pioneer deck . The biggest down fall is it's a bit of a reach down , but 16 gigs of music , a remote and hit random play helps . I'm gonna get a better console from something newer the next time I go to a pick and pull . I'd build my own but it probably would look like it came from the "Handy Man's Corner " from the Red Green show .

if your on a budget and still want a pretty good cd deck i would just get one from a pawn shop, they have good deals and usally you can get them to throw in some speakers they have have too. all and all might cost about 150 compared to 300-400 new. and you can just do some cutting and fitting to make it fit, reciprocating saw works great for that by the way ;) i helped my buddy do this in his 77 stepside and it worked out great, just had to find the right install kit with the big face plate thing to cover the stock gap on top and bottom. hope this helps.

I had one of these setups in my truck until I redid the whole truck. it was a good stereo and sounded nice
The set I used to have cost about $100, this ones $150 but if you search around you may find one of these sets. if you do take the manufacturer's part number and hunt ebay, etc for it. may get it real cheap. I got like a $350 head unit in mine and i got it for around $150 by hunting all the internet deals. i don't remember where though.

Honestly ebay is whatsup with stereo equipment. If you're comfortable with using it.

hey just thought i would add if anyone wants ANY kind of stereo stuff online you should check out onlinecarstereo.com they have literally every brand and product you could ever want, and alot of their stuff have reviews by people who have the product. great site, great prices. oh P.S. i have had tons of different car stereos and i would say stay away from sony, and clarion, sony is just low quality and clarions interface is hard to navigate and lacks alot of features. i only use pioneer but some people dont care for them, alpine is always good, but tend to get really hot so only install in spacious areas, panisonic is probably the best brand belive it or not, i used to do high end a/v installations and thats all we ever used. simple, fully featured, and good price points. hope that helps you make a selection. good luck, let us know how it turns out! and if you want new speakers diamond are the best, by far. (buy them and you'll blow people away, lol)
