My search goes on for my dream truck, a rust free 6' bed 4x4 stepside.
Living in Mass most of the trucks fall into 2 categories, rot boxes or overpriced restored trucks. I'm just looking for a daily driver in the $5K range, not expecting a show truck
I'm thinking about heading south if I can find the right truck on Craigslist.
My question is how far south? Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia,Florida?
Keep in mind most of the trucks look great in pics (even the rotted ones from here).
Just trying to figure where I should start looking.

i am in Va and I can tell you, i'd go to Tx (not by coastal TX), AZ or southern CA for rust free trucks...add NM to that too.
I bought my 91 sub from Phoenix, even though it was 15 yrs old when i bought it, it seemed brand new
www.delbridge.net/suburban
There is practically no rain there, no snow, therefore no salt on roads....quite nice.
Va, we have salt....especially this year...boy the jurisdictions are yelling that they have all spent 3x their annual budget already on snow removal and salt/sand and the winter aint over yet. Snow has been on the gorund here since mid December and it is still here and it was 50 degrees today for the first time in over two months.
anyway, Eastern NC, Eastern SC, all of FL seems will have too much salt in the air from the ocean. That will eat away at these old trucks too. Around the gulf coast will be too much salt too.
I don't think you have to pay a lot for them down there either because all of them are rustfree (in general) AND the older vehicles are harder at passing the mandatory sniffer tests that the rest of the country doesnt have to worry about, except big metro areas. They are cheaper down there because of this. I paid $3500 from my sub.

Search Houston, Dallas, or San Antonio (Texas) Craigslist, you'd be suprised what you'll find.

Id look in Lubbock,El Paso, and possibly Amarillo. Amarillo gets more snow than the others, but Ive still seen alot of rust free trucks from there. Not sure about Houston cause its close to the Gulf. I have one truck from Corpus Christi which isnt too far from Houston, and it looks like swiss cheese. Its the worst one I have, but it came with a 30K mile 350 crate motor---free

Mine is 8'. When I bought it my original plan was to swap everything over to a shortbed frame. I figured the only thing I would have to replace (and paint) would be the bedsides and get a 6' wood/stainless steel strip kit for the bed. The 8 footer kind of grew on me but everytime I see a shortbed stepside I think "why not".
Lately I've been finding deals on Military trucks (just got a M1009 blazer-rot box), but sooner or later the plan is to get another stepside.

There was a decent looking shortbed stepside cheap on CL last week.

I take that back, looks like he sold it. Here's some more

I'm about an hour east of el paso, real small town lots of our year trucks still running strong but only as a work horse nothin fancy. In town theres a stepside I asked about before i got mine, not running so may not be your daily driver material but definately rust free. El paso and odessa craigslist has tons of chevy trucks posted check there if youre ever in the area!

I agree, but 85% of the trucks around here (Houston) have very little rust.

I've always heard there are a lot of good trucks and bodies in Arkansas. It's far enough away from the Gulf but I don't think it really snows enough to salt the roads. Just my 2cents...

I'm in Little Rock. You can certainly pick up a rust-free truck here. You can also find rot boxes here. I just bought my 80 short wide bed here and it has a little rust. It depends a lot on how the truck was taken care of. Mine was clearly a victim of severe neglect. But it was cheap.

Come out here to cheyenne, wyoming our trucks dont rust well maybe a little i had an 85 with the typical cab rust behind the door in the corner but that was it... i got a rust free 84 blazer for 1500... rust aint that big of a problem here

I don't know if you found one yet, but down here in North Carolina there are quite a few rust free trucks. Some have rust, but not as much as the rust belt. I picked up a running driving 85 K10 back in November for $2500. All it needed was some interior work and paint. Only rust is on the drivers side behind the left rear wheel.
