So I've got a line on an '84 k10 long bed scottsdale with a 305.
Guy had it running about 4 years ago and said it started over heating. He swears it was running when he parked it.
The passenger floor pan is shot and the rocker panel has rusted away from the floor as it curves up the the seat mount.
I'd really love to have a 4x4.
He's asking $400 for it. Is that a good price?

Definitely! I picked up mine for $300, but it wasa 6 cyl 2wd with a three on the tree. Is it an automatic?
-
yes it's an auto

A little wrenchin, and you'll have something halfway decent.

$400 isn't bad..its in better condition than the '87 v20 I've been rolling in. Woot for trucks owned by pig farmers ::)
-
not bad at all. i got my 73 k10 for $500. doing lots of work to her but she'll be a beauty in no time

Check the vin number against the title before you buy, and use the one on the dash. I looked at a crewcab not too long ago that was titled as an 88, but the vin number on the dash was to an 85. The only vin number that matched the title was the drivers door. The one you showed has a 81-82 front end on it, which got me thinking about the vin swap. Not a bad price if you dont need the title, but is a little high for a door with a vin number on it.

good point choptop, will do.

You cant go wrong for $400. The junkyards around here would pay that much if you brought it to them ($160 @ton)
How are you at welding? You can get the repair panels on this site for cheap money. Even if the motor is junk from overheating you can get a 350 from craigslist for a few hundred to get you on the road. It could be a roadworthy 4x4 truck for under 1K.
Let us know if you get it.

i paid 400 for a parts truck lol i would just try to talk him down a bit tho maybe 300
-
yeah no talking him down; he's made that abundantly clear lol.
I've never welded anything in my life. Looking to learn though so this might just be my opportunity huh.
Thanks for the advice guys.

i picked up my 84 swb with only 50,000 miles on the goodwrench 350 , need paint and some body work, got new window motors and was parked five years and i got it running and it runns awesome.. i only paid 400 dollars

Man I would run away from that truck, not trying to sound like a jerk, There are a million of these trucks out there that can be had for close to nothing, save your money and keep looking around. You might thank me latter.

As a general rule I buy just about every 73/87 I see on the side of the road thats in that price range.
Do you have access to a tow truck or car trailer? If so buy it and tow it home. See if you can solve the overheating problem, then concentrate on the rust. If it turn out that the rust is more than you can deal with strip for parts and junk it. As I said before you would get most of your $$ back at the junkyard. If all else feels you will have a ton of spare parts for free or close to it.
Maybee the next $400 truck you find will have a great body but needs a tranny or rear end. If your into these trucks you can never have too many spare parts for them.
