1985 GMC K1500 700r4 transfer case with torque bar on side not sure which it is but not full time 4wd either.
Tranny is working fine, i am putting a polished aluminum pan on the tranny, fluid smells bad, not burnt but bad some what near gear oil. So far i have the pan on the new filter in, waiting for tomorrow to get a allen head socket to sinch down the new bolts and add fluid. I hope i don't have to have the tranny rebuilt, i got a guy that can do it i just don't want to have to take it out. Also Where do i check the transfer case fluid at and fill it and drain it and does it use gear oil or tranny fluid and does the 700r4 run fluid to the transfercase or are they independent?

The transfer case is a NP 208. They run ATF from the factory. But I have been told by several re builders that 10 W 30 or 5 30 motor oil is good in them. Thats what i run in all my 208's and they work fine. The fill is facing the rear, a hex head plug. I usually use an adjustable wrench but I think its 1" or right around there.

ATF DEXRON in both. They do not share fluid unless you have seal failure on the transfercase input. In that case the trans fluid goes low and the transfercase goes overfull. The fill and drain plug should be 30mm

I am going to flush out some of the tranny fluid and try to change the transfer case fluid and hope for the best. I want to start driving this thing around.
