Title: np-203 transfer case
Post by: BIG CHEVY on March 21, 2010, 06:56:39 pm
     hey guys......

i can do just about anything to 2wd vehicles so i can understand any info u give me. however
i just got my first 4 wheel drive.  its a 79 k-10.   here is my problem.
it will pull fine in h-loc,      it will pull fine in l-loc, both shafts spinning. full time 4wd.  i get that.
but in just plain h or l only the front driveshaft spins.
is this normal?    also in everyday driving situations where should i keep the selector?  the previous owner said keep it all the
way against the seat-----h-loc.   need to be sure.
got the off road bug so im goin all the way.

thanks in advance for any help,    lookin forward to any advice.

Sounds like u don't have the 2wd kit. Your saying with the front hubs unlocked and in h or l you don't move?

thats right.  i have manual locking hubs on front wheels and in free the shaft just turns no motion.
if i lock hubs im sure ill move.   but the odd thing to me is why not rear wheels in the non lock positions at trans case selector.

Think of the 203 is just like a dif open dif it will spin the shaft with less resistance. The manual hubs of the front are kind of useless unless you get the 2wd kit from mile marker.

hi. if the PO told you to keep it in hi loc, then something is wrong. you shouldnt drive it on pavement in hi loc.

The stock 203 came with auto hubs so u could leave it unlocked. With manual hubs you have to eather lock the front and put it in unlock or lock the 203 and unlock the hubs turning everything but the wheels that's why I said I thought it was worthless with out the 2wd kit
