I have a 4" suspension life in a '75 3/4 ton. I've replaced EVERY component in my front suspension. I still have to counter steer even though a reman gear box and alignment did tighten it up quite a bit. I still have to counter steer. I just can't figure it out. Are reman gear box's in need of adjustment out of the box? Is it a crap shoot trying to get a good reman? It's getting frustrating doing every possible thing I can think of - I bled it right - new everything up front, top to bottom. I'd like my wife to be able to drive it too. Please help its starting to hurt my head.
Thanks
Jake

What exactly is it doing?
-
Do you mean bumpsteer?
-
When you turn the steering wheel it hesitates briefly before it turns so when the wheels start turning say left for instance your already turning the wheel to the right. I did tonight adjust the adjuster screw on the rebuilt steering box got it pretty close (don't have to counter steer as much) It doesn't seem like I over adjusted the box but now the steering wheel seems to tight.
-
so there was play in the steering wheel
-
You should not have adjusted the box. You have play in your steering somewhere.
-
Bad tie rods maybe. Definately not the box.
-
I just dont where the play could be? ihave every thing replaced upper lower ball joints both sides new tie rod for both ends new draglink reman gear box had it aligned. any ideas on what else there could trouble id very much appreciate it!! Im very puzzled Ive checked all the hardware ive replaced for slop or play several times and I still dont know what could possibly be. Maybe i did miss somthing. I sure could use some ideas.
thanks for the help

Do a dry park check. Have an assistant turn the steering back and fourth about 30° from center and observe the steering linkage. Check the frame, the steering shaft, the steering box, ball joints etc
-
Like vile said With the engine off and have the key one so the wheel lock will be disengaged have someone move the wheel and see what moves before the wheels move

one time i had an eclipse that had kinda that same problem i think your describing, turned out to be a bad p/s pump. just my 2 cents.
-
Don't know if it makes a difference but the eclipse has a rack and pinion right
-
yeah im pretty sure it was, but the problem was that it had a crack or something so it would let air in and the pressure would go all crazy and air would get caught so it couldn't turn until the air left, which was pretty fast since the power steering pretty much bleeds itself but still annoying and kinda dangerous... idk if that experience helps at all but something to think about maybe...

Im pretty sure I got er licked. The power steering belt was tight enough for most however when the motor was running the belt was kinda jumpy on the pully. I decided to tighten it up now the pump started moanin. I swaped pumps i changed resivours the resvour and pump was full uf sludge. Put er together and back on the truck big difference!! Did a dry park check like you guys told me to check slop. pretty tight. I have one more question though. On the bottom of the gear box the splined shaft that the steering arm connects to seems to move in and out of the box a little bit before any thing else moves in dry park test. IS this normal or in need of attention.
thanks all you guys for the advice, saved me a few gray hairs.

don't forget to re-adjust your steering box back like it was.
-
Yes it is normal. There is a torsion bar in there that operates the control valve in the steering box. This allows the fluid to enter the power chamber and exhaust depending on the amount of turning effort. Basically it gives you more assist at lower speeds.

problem was other than taking forever to figure out was that the front axels were twisted back ever so slightly shimed them forward handels like a dream. thanks for helpin out guys.
