Title: needing some carb help
Post by: thachevythang on March 22, 2010, 06:52:18 am
Hey guys, another question! I have an electric choke carb now and if I replace it should it be with another electric choke or can I get a manual one? I'm low on the play money but need my truck running again!!!

You can go either way pretty easily.  The time to set it up is about the same either way and the cost is pretty close either way.  Its just about preference.  I like an automatic choke.  I like to be able to start it and forget it.

They make a cable for manual chokes you can mount in the cab. Eather way I just keep mine open and don't worry about it just they don't like real cold weather

I can't say for sure, but 500 should be fine.  I am curious what carb. you are considering that's 500 cfm?

Generally speaking a 350 needs no more than 600cfm to fuel 5500 rpms.
If it is stock and you don't plan to turn the 305 more than 5000, a 500cfm is plenty.

Do you currently have a square bore carb? If not, you'll need an adapter.

My 305 is all stock! Still has the Q-jet. Whats a decent adapter if needed?

the adapter is pretty standard. have you considered rebuilding your q-jet.

Well its unresponsive. At start up I get nothing at all unless somebody else gives it throttle from under the hood. If you ever let up on it, it dies. Bought it and the truck ran fine 'till one month later and a morning when we had all the snow, rough to start no biggie same ol stuff went to work fine but on the way home I could tell it was ideling rough. Never started up again. Choke light came on once checked that and all hoses etc. I know the carbs bad it was covered in carb cleaner and cob webs when I first got to. Maybe a vaccum leak somewhere I got some REALLY bad hoses. Oh yeah ive got hoses coming out of the carb with screws in it to plug em up so I dont even know how the previous owner got to murdering it but everything under the hood is a mess and needs a total overhaul!!!!

You can rebuild a Q-jet for less than $50.

fix your hoses. route them right. It won't cost much and it may solve the problem. also check your accerator pump. if that's bad you should probably rebuild the carb. start with what you can see and have to fix anyway. My first choice is a q-jet.  shouldn't be anything wrong with it that a rebuild can't fix.

Almost sounds like my lil 4 wheeler. Something is just slowing down the fuel check the filter then rebuild the carb. I mean that's what I would do trying to save ya some money that's all

Also, it may not be just an adapter, you might need a tv cable/detent cable stud for the carb plus other things. Probably easier and cheaper to rebuild the Qjet.

What transmission do you have?

Also, do you plan on buying at the autoparts store or summit racing or jegs or? Take a picture of your current setup.

Ok well its been another long while but I got me a rebuild kit for the carb. As far as the hoses I dont know where to start so Im just gonna put her in the shop after the rebuild and see what they say about the passenger fuel tank as well. I've even been thinking about an engine swap. I found a rebuilt 350 that a guy pulled from his jeep that runs like a champ but then I couldnt pass up a 454 with 350 tranny for $750 that both were rebuilt and from what the p.o. said still runs and he only put 25000 since the rebuild. Haven't seen it in person though so I dont wanna dive into that just yet!!!
