My '87 short step 2x has a gawdawful ugly fuel meter where
the tach "Should" be.......
Should I (1) replace the circuit board and find a tack.
(2) install a VERY small tach in the one unused port on the
lower left of the panel?
Opinions?

i also have your same problem, i think its pretty much a personal choice, im just going to try and find a factory cluster with a tack because i dont like having a huge gauge for my gas and it seems like a tach in the bottom corner would be too out of the way to be useful. i have also been thinking about getting the big after market tachs and putting that in place of the fuel gauge but that just seems like it might look a little funny if i didnt also change out all the other gauges. i really want to find one of the old factory clusters with rpm and fuel in the same big pod, but i think they only came in diesels. but yeah i say go factory, check parts yards, ebay, and classifieds.

I mounted mine to my a-pillar. It's a bit jiggly there but it's different and I didn't have to drill a hole in my uncracked dashpad.

be weary of factory gauges and keep in mind only 78-up can easily be made to work on your truck.

I "mounted" mine on the steering column with a couple hose clamps wrapped around the column. It's a bit of a jury-rig, but it's very easy to see and I can see the speedo/fuel gauge just fine.
