I was asked to sell a buddies wrecked 98 Taurus and am asking what needs to be done to bypass the airbag sensors so I can start the car to move easily. Both bags went off and I reset the fuel pump switch in the trunk but was told there something else needs to be done before it would run. Any thoughts??? It is a bear to push.

when i wrecked my 92 sable granted 6 years difference but i think its about the same the fuel pump switch was never tripped but the bag went off and it died. come to find out i crushed a mod that sits on top of the rad don't know what it goes to but replaced it and she was good even with out no air bag in it light was on but it never didn't start cause of it its just telling you that theres a problem with it

You don't need to bypass the airbag crash sensors. REset the fuel pump inertia switch and try starting it. If it doesn't start describe what it's doing. Is it a crank no start? Does it have spark? Did you hear the fuel pump come on?
-
No fuel pump noise, has spark wants to start with a shot of starting fluid. I did reset the fuel pump inertia switch in the trunk, it wasn't popped up anyway. Maybe the pump went bad by sitting.

You can do a few easy pinpoint tests to determine if it's the pump but first real quick check the fuses and make sure the reset worked. You can also bypass the inertia switch if you think it's faulty. There's a bulletin on those for the fuel pump wires chafing also. Let me see If I can find it.

ISSUE
There may be a possible chafing of the fuel pump assembly wires resulting in an open fuse and/or inoperable fuel pump assembly or a no start condition on some vehicles. This may be due to wires chafing on the hose clamps that retain the pressure and return fuel hoses. Chafing may also occur on the flange of the assembly and the tank itself.
ACTION
Install plastic sheathing onto wire harness. The plastic sheathing protects the wire and should reduce the possibility of rubbing and chafing. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Obtain Fuel Pump Sheathing Kit (F8PZ-9A213-BA). Service Kits should be installed when servicing any fuel pump, fuel level sender, or fuel pump/sender assembly which does not have the sheathing already in place.
2. Remove tie straps from wire harness on the fuel pump assembly.
3. Disconnect fuel pump connector and sender ground.
4. Select correct plastic wire sheathing (190 mm (7.5" long for most applications).
5. Install wire sheathing over the fuel pump wires and sender ground wire.
6. If possible, place yellow sender positive wire inside sheathing. If in-line connector prevents this, route sender positive wire against the outside of the sheathing.
7. Secure wire bundle with tie strap about 25 mm (1") from each end of the sheathing.
8. Tighten tie straps to prevent shifting of the wire sheathing.

Vile is correct, the senors have nothing to do with the car not running. I think Irish may be on to something, those cars have a rectangle relay box on the backside of the rad. support/header panel to the Left of center. My guess would be a broken relay, blown fuse, cut wiring, ect. in this area. Hope this helps! Lorne

That box is fine, so is the fuel pump fuse. I will swap the relay and see what happens. I jumped the inertia switch just in case that was bad.

Fuel pump is apparently DOA. Fuse, relay, inertia switch all checked out. Put a fuel pressure gauge in and no pressure, however gas does seep out after I disconnect the gauge. A squirt of fuel she wants to start. Thanks everyone for chiming in.

smack the tank a few times with a dead blow hammer while someone cranks the engine
