Title: Ignition switch harness
Post by: werewolfx13 on March 30, 2010, 10:10:42 am
Finally getting around to looking at the damage on my wiring harness on my '83, and it looks like the only melted section that really NEEDS replacement is the harness that connects to the ignition switch. I have a couple questions..I haven't had enough time to really dig the harness out, does it just connect to the fuse block as one short bundle, or does it split off? Also, how year-specific is that part of the harness? I'm going to re-work the under hood wiring from scratch, with new fusible links.

If no one remembers, this mess came about one night when driving home from work. Going around a curve, the truck died without the slightest warning, and wouldn't even crank...Since I'd replaced the ignition switch a few months prior, I suspected that maybe the screws came loose and the switch slipped back to the off position when I hit a bump. So while I was still rolling, I reach under the dash to see if I can move the switch, and ended up burning my fingers on the ignition switch harness. I switched the key off, but the dash lights were all still lit..then the smoke came rolling out from under the dash..got parked, popped the hood, and yanked the battery cables off and went back to make sure nothing was on fire..after the smoke cleared, we towed the truck home, and I've since parked it in my shop since the plates and insurance have expired.
