Title: limited slip diff

i got a 79 k-10 350/350/203..........    i need to fix my diff covers that leak.

vile says i need lim slip additive if it is limited slip.

how do u tell if its lim slip?     whats easiest and whats guaranteed?

Floor it on your street and see if it leaves two black stripes ;D  Take the diff cover off and compare what's inside to pics on this site.  Limited slip has a bunch of extra "stuff" inside.

When you remove the carrier an open differential will just have two differential side gears and two pinion bevel gears or as most people call them spider gears. The spider gears are on a pinion shaft retained in the carrier by a pin bolt.

If it is a limited slip carrier it will have an S shaped spring around the differential pinion shaft and a multiple disk clutch pack. If it had a cone type lsd you would see coil springs and a set of plates. If it's a gov-loc you'll see a spring and lock mechanism etc... Just post a couple pix when you pull the cover and we'll tell you what you have.
