I'm toying with the idea of going with a metal floor bed because I would like to actually use my bed. I think if I went with wood I wouldn't use as much. My questions are: Has anyone done this? Has anyone done it with a long stepside (8'6" bed)? Is there a way to make it look like a fleetside bed floor?

I have a customer with a long bed stepside and he has a thick diamond plate floor.

Can I get a piece that big? How much do you think that would run?
-
Yes you can but it will be HEAVY! Check with your local steel manufacturer or supplier

Diamond plate comes in 16 ga isnt the floor only 18 ga ? If so dont think the weight would be too much more.

I have a step side bed, and I will be installing composite decking boards (for added weight support). Then, I'll install polished aluminum diamond plate over top of it. I visited a metal distributor called BMG metals (they're reasonable). Google them, and see if they have a local outlet in your area. Hope this helps. ;D

Years ago I replaced the wood in a step side bed with diamond plate. I used 1/16" thick.

You will have to shim the supports to make the new metal the same height as the wood was. I thought about doing the same thing to mine but I found it to be less expensive to do wood.
