Alright so here's the deal... I'm really tired of fighting the good fight with my gopher problem. I came across this product at my local ACE hardware, and I'm almost embarrassed to say that I actually have a glimmer of hope that this thing will work. It's a very basic concept, the device couples a garden hose to your exhaust pipe, which is then fed into the gopher tunnel. You let your vehicle idle for 20 to 30 minutes and the fumes kill all the critters in the tunnel. Now... has my desperation blinded me to the point of buying into the lies of a money sucking gimmick, or could this actually work?

Seems like a standard variety male profalactic device with an end clipped off would join the hose to the pipe ;D
-
Haha... I'm game if it works. :)
-
If the price is right, why not. BUT I would take into consideration the distance of your neighbors as well as the possibility of gopher holes under your house. CO is very poisonous, obviously, and has no odor. Be cautious that it doesnt leak into the houses. Just because you dont smell exhaust in your house, doesnt mean that the CO made its way there.
Now if your sure there arent any escape routes for the exhaust under a house, then I dont see a problem. Maybe consult a exterminator, although they might suggest otherwise since you are intruding into their business of making money.

Tune your carb rich, and get an oil burning car, too. Lol.
-
seems like exhaust back pressure issues could take place. Just don't rev it up--there is a reason your exhaust is at leat 1 3/4 inches in diameter. ensure the end of the hose doesnt lay up up against the dirt--there should be an avenue of venting (thru another hole or something) to avoid too much exhaust back pressure.

don't let PETA find out about this lol they would have a field day

now this would seem to work but the rodent wont have its nest that close to the opening of a hole. also since they burrow so close to the serface of the ground making all them cracks on the top i think the pressure would bust through the ground making multiple leaks and it might not be as effective as it seams good ideal but this seams better

I like a 22-250 for woodchucks. Where we live right now I couldn't shoot one. I do know what you are up against. I have gopher problems under my shed, apparently a skunk took over the lease under my shed this spring.
-
wow im surprised they sell that hose thing. Its like a suicide in a box kit. I mean with everyone being very PC these days, there wasnt anyone who wanted it off the selves yet.
-
I wanna try it, but im not dumb enough to wish i had gophers...haha
-
Well... I just tried it. And... I don't think it's going to work. I tried this on my beater car (2000 Ford Focus) in case anything went wrong. I connected the device onto the tailpipe and proceeded to start the engine. It tried to turn over and then died. I thought... hmmm... interesting. So I tried again and the Underground Exterminator blew off of the tailpipe! At that point I thought well let me loosen the thing a bit and try again. I did and all the exhaust fumes escaped without going into the hose. After assessing the situation I really doubt the thing would work even if I got it to clamp onto the tailpipe correctly. There are just too many escape points for the fumes. I mean... the stinking gophers have made so many holes in my yard I don't know how in the world I would ever make the ground air tight. Oh well... that's what receipts are for I guess. :)

yeah ditch the suicide machine. Get yourself a male orange cat and teach him to live outside.
-
Maybe some argon down the hole? its heavier than air so it would fill the burrows like water... there's a warning on that stuff that while its inert and not dangerous it will displace oxygen and you could essentially drown in it if it all gathered in a low spot somewhere and you went down in it. Might work if you're on flat land. Or get a Jack Russel.

Sounds like the best way and you get to see fights once in a while,my neighbours cat was tackling a sewer rat half its length just yesterday and it was hilarious to watch..end result rat with no head...job done.

what's wrong with using duct tape and a garden hose....just wrap duct tape, with the hose stuck inside the pipe, around and around and around.
-
What you need to do is get rid of their food source. They eat grubs, so get you some GrubX made by Scotts. My neighbor did and now it's in my yard...
-
Sgt looks like you seen that a couple times

From what I've read gophers don't eat grubs. Moles do. Another idea that I read is to stick a flare down into the tunnel. Apparently the sulfur smell keeps them away.

How about a couple of bags of commercial expanding foam, the stuff they seal old mine shafts up with...encase them ;D

They will just dig up more holes in your lawn.

This guys seems to have a pretty good product. He seems to know what he's talking about and the website is very informative. I like the idea of using an actual trap so you know whether or not you really got it (or probably them in my case).

That's the ideal lol. Like the pic I had above just gig them
-
why not just buy a cheap 10-22 and plink away at them?
-
i cant think when was the last time i seen a mole or gopher. beside when a cat got one and left them at the door

I've been following this thread for the last couple of days and all I can think about is Bill Murray in Caddyshack!
-
i always stuck a running water hose down the hole and watched for them to come out. got a BIIIGGGGG golpher that way

I have never seen the movie... but your not the first person to to mention it to me. I'm just waiting for my traps to come in. Hopefully I'll be posting a success story in a couple days.

Good luck with your mission, all the same...If you have a nice lawn and work hard to keep it that way, then by all means them rodents gotta go! I have also had great luck with garden hoses in as many holes as I could find...Sometimes I've even been really lucky and just stomped on one of the critters when they were pushing dirt out of their hole!

These actually work. I have some similar in my shed that I used http://molechasersinternational.com/

Vile family site lol

Thanks Vile. I'm hoping the traps will solve my problem. But if not I may give these a shot. I already tried a little windmill that was supposed to do the same thing. It worked for a few days but then I guess the gopher(s) became desensitized to it and came back. So I don't know...

Take some plaster of paris, mix it in with some tasty feed (do some research to see what your varmint eats) and put it down the holes so they can feed on it.
They cannot process the plaster of paris and it plugs up their intestines. We do this in our chicken barns to reduce the mice and it works wonders. They are used to the chicken feed so that is what we use.

since we are throwing ideas out, here's one for ya. take a water hose and filler the hole up with water. Take an old extension cord and strip the female end off to two bare stripped wires. Ok, you know where I'm going with this. Plug it in at the right time, but stay clear of the water. You may have to flip your breaker afterwards. ;D Don't try this at home! It's a joke and will most likely get the person electrocuted.

Hahaha... that's good stuff. Before I got to the joke part I was thinking, "wow this dude is seriously crazy."

Success! I put out two traps and got at least one kill. I say at least because I think I got two but I lost the second trap. I think the gopher may have tried to get away and dragged it further into the tunnel. So I'm a little bumbed that I lost a trap but I'm very happy that it actually worked, and worked quickly. I put them out yesterday and had the kill this morning!

man i would get them tested for roids. are you sure its a gopher and not a ground hog lol
-
Got that freaking gopher from caddyshack.
I can't believe they sell a kit that you just hook a hose up to your car exhaust lol. That has about to be banned written all over it. My dog used to kill gophers. Then they bit him on the face and he stopped.
-
Yep... I've caught 3 gophers so far and went two days without any new mounds. This morning I noticed a small mound and set out the trap again... that's ok with me though because I'm making progress. My wife says I'm hoping there are new mounds because I love the hunt. :)
-
That would be funny if this developed into a hunting hobby for you lol. Like because you liked hunting gophers, you moved on up to deer. And squirrels.
