First off, I'd like to say hello to everyone. I've actually been on here quite a while but never posted anything just read all kinds of stuff. But now I have a question. I have tried searching but after hours of reading and finding out that they fit great I still couldnt find what i was looking for. Here goes nothin. Could some of you post some pics of how well the "GM" dashes fit? The ones that Capt sells. Such as how the trim fits on the passenger end and how the dash fits around the gauge cluster? I need a new dash real bad and soon, or one thats in perfect shspe, like thats gonna happen :D Anyway, thanks guys.
-
GM dashes fit mint! Even aftermarket stuff fits good on them. The aftermarket ones which you would think would work better with aftermarket accessories are junk. I tried a dashes direct dash pad for my 85 and sent it back. It was ridiculous how poor the fitment was. If you love your truck it's well worth the investment on a new GM dash.

There's some pix of mine here

I have had good luck with GM dashes and I actually had good luck with Dashes Direct 81-87 SKINNED dashes.
-
Chris what are skinned dashes? Are they over a frame like OE? The one I got was like a giant rubber blob
-
yeah, they are like factory and only come in black or Blue. The Rubber blob ones are not restoration worthy..
-
In my opinion, coverlay dash covers are your best bet. They make your original dash look like it's brand new. And there are no fitment issues because you are using the original dash, that already fits perfectly. Take my word for this part at least: Fitment is a big issue. You will save yourself a lot of time, money, and hassle if you just get a Coverlay brand skin for your old dash. They are sold right here on this site. Now I'm not saying that the new GM dashes aren't great. But from my experience, the coverlays are where it's at. If done properly there is no way to tell that there is even a dash cover on the dash. I'm a stickler for details, and I often find little flaws that bug me where other people would just overlook. And I can find no flaw in my coverlay dash skin.
-
I would really like to see some of these coverlays installed. If they can be installed so that you cant tell, not saying that they cant, i would like to see them.
-
skunksmash is right. i found one at the junk yard. 15 bucks and some good spray adhesive and these things fit over your factory dash pretty perfect. i even put this gray material over my plastic cover and it still fits over the original dash good. original dashes are the best but are very pricey. but ive seen these hard plastic covers be pricey too. i guess i just got lucky at the bone yard that day. we actually bought it for my buddies 83 silverado. that is the day i found out 70's dashes are different than 80's dashes. so he gave it to me after we paid for it.

oh and they are easy to paint/dye to match also.
-
Hey guys, just a quickie! My dash is in the back of the garage and not accessible at the moment :-\
Do the original dashes have a part number stamped underneath anywhere. My truck has two listed as its a late 70's so could be a '78, '79 or an '80!
cheers

First: I guess we dont really understand your question. As far as I know there is no number under the dash. The only one I know of is behind the trim on the front of it and i dont know if it is anything important.
Second: Has anyone ever thought about shaping and vacuum forming a dash? I am in the process of it right now. Mind u its in the very very early stages, as in thinking of it. Just food for thought :)
-
sorry about the Q. I was looking to order a dash pad but the company listed two for the year of my truck. I'm not sure which one I have and was looking for an easy way to identify it.
cheers
-
The 81-87 dashes are pretty different from the 73-80 dashes. I pretty sure there was only the two. Who are you u planning on getting it through? Anyway look on the far right side of the dash if it points out toward the the seat/door panel its an 81-87 if not then its an 73-80.
Also look at the pic that mrbooy17 posted notice how the top of the dash kind of curves in towards the gauge cluster, thats an 73-80 dash.
-
Cheers for the info bud, I've decided to go the other way and have mine recovered. The cost of shipping to the UK was more than the product itself!!
cheers
-
I could still us some pics of those dash covers if thats possible. Im really starting to think that they dont fit all that well because no one will post pics of them.
-
Ya, thats it. Those darn covers dont fit because no one will take pictures of them. How about no one will take pictures of them because they dont fit well. Better? Have you tried coverlay direct? Have you tried the SEARCH function??
-
Nothing in the SEARCH. Oh well just going to get a new dash.
-
where are you going to get a new dash from?
I would gladly post pictures if I had any trucks around that the covers installed.
There are 3 dash styles.
73-78 ( no dash VIN)
79-80
81-87(91)
-
Its ok capt. I wish I could tell you that I would be getting one through you but unless you could beat 380 to my hands I have to go another route, sorry man.
-
I could pretty easily beat $380 with an aftermarket dash, which is why I asked where you were getting it from.
GM dashes list for over $400 my cost, I question if you are getting a real GM dash especially for $380.
-
Be really good friends with the dealership owner and you too can get some really good deals. I guess the shipping would be what would kill the deal for some. I am lucky enough to not have to pay it. #15641405 go ask them what it costs them to buy it and then give them like $10 more. Hey, they are still making money.
-
its funny you mention custom moulding a dash board,i work in a plastic molding shop, (rotational mold) i was thinking of removing my bench seat in my 78 c10 and moulding a center console with 2 bucket seats. i would love your input, and could maybe give you a few helpfull hints
-
well I dont think that Im going to do it right now truck needs to get finished first. The cost is higher right now for me to build the dash vs buying one. I dont get a discount on the material that I needed so its not going to work out right now. Still going to work on it though so I will hit you up.
-
@ mrboy77:
I'm afraid that is not a coverlay dash cover. That just looks like a dash that has be recovered with some felt or fine carpet. The coverlay dash is a new skin, which makes the dash look like it did when it was brand new. There is no fuzz of any kind on it.

Skunksmash, did you read what he wrote?
i even put this gray material over my plastic cover and it still fits over the original dash good
-
yea i put that speaker box carpet stuff on the coverlay dash cover after i checked the fit. i was skeptical of how it would fit at first but after test fitting it i covered the coverlay....used some good adhesive and about 6 clamps and glued it all on top of the original dash that was cracked to heck. so that is a coverlay dash cover. just instead of dying it i tried something different to see what it would turn out like. the verdict is still out and i cant decide if i like it with that carpet on it or not.
mark
-
Oh sorry I guess I didn't see that part for some reason. Man, I would change it back. Not knocking your decision or anything but, why did you decide to put carpet on an already good looking cover?
-
It looks good and if you like it I'd leave it.
-
skunksmash: i got the cover from the junk yard for 15 bucks. it wasnt brand new looking or anything. i could have dyed it but because it was cheap i just tried something different. i just cant decide if i like the softer carpeted look or hard plasticky look. just got a wild hair up my arse to see what it would be like. i actually kinda like it. i also made all my dash lights bright blue led so im just trying different things....you can always change back for really cheap. i like blue lights and it looks cool with my stereo lights too they are blue.
-
Ah, ok that makes sense.
