Im looking to rebuild my steering gear box, as that is where the play is. I browsed a parts store online, and they ask what casting number I have. Anyone know where it is located so I can find it faster? Anyone rebuild one? How was it?

Easy rebuild if you know what you're doing. The casting number is at the mounting flange where it bolts to the frame. You will have to remove the box to see it.

OK thanks. Thats what I didnt want to know. I was hoping it was visible prior to removing it. Either way, I suppose I have to get it done. Thanks!

Is there anyway to predetermine what casting number is on the steering gear box? Im looking for a rebuild kit, and it lists two numbers. First design 7802644L or second design 7802644.

You're going to wish you just got a reman unit. They're cheap enough.

Really that hard to rebuild huh? With the casting numbers, I assume they have to match if I get a new one?

Just asking: Are you sure its the steering box causing all of the play? A brand new unit is going to have some slop in it too--I've seen a lot of people say these are bad when they really aren't. What looks like minor movement in other parts can add up big time. Is this a 2 or 4 wheel drive?

4wd. It's the only thing left I haven't replaced. The steering wheel and steering shaft has slop in each direction before the pitman arm turns. How much slop does a new unit have?

You're sure the play isn't in the rag joint right? Do you know how to do the high point lash adjustment?

I'll double check to make sure it isn't the rag joint. Is the high point lash adjustment in a manual? I have haynes, chilton, and the factory manual.

Finally got a chance to look at my slop a little closer. The steering shaft turns almost 1/4 turn before the pitman arm starts to move. The rag joint isnt the issue, its all firm. I'll probably order a new box after I decide which frame brace kit I want to get.

Try adjusting the lash first just don't over do it.

If adjusting a steering box it is important to follow the factory manual exactly;the gear must be removed from the truck and the worm bearing preload set first before setting the over center adjustment.Although not hard to do adjusting a steering box is a safety related item and should be done properly.

??? When initially setting up the gear box true the worm bearing preload is set first but the high point or sector lash adjustment can be done in the truck on an existing box.
