Title: Quiet down the shift linkage?

This probly doesn't bother most of you, if you can even hear it. But ever since I had my transmission rebuilt, when I put it in drive, or park, (or whatever) it's ridiculously loud. You can hear this **clack clank clack!!** all the way across the parking lot. It's especially bad in drive through's. I even notice people give me this look like they are thinking "what the heck is wrong with that thing...?"

It's so loud that I actually thought that there might be a problem and I went ahead and inspected it all for something that might be about to break. It looks like he may have used some new pieces, but it's really no different than any of my other trucks, and I couldn't see anything wrong. It's been doing it since I got the tranny rebuilt a little over a year ago, and everything is working just fine. It's just embarassingly loud. I swear it wasn't this loud before I had the tranny rebuilt. When I got it back I just thought "Oh well, new parts might need some breaking in."

You guys think some thick piece of rubber, placed in the right spot, might help me out with this?

If it makes the sound When it gets into gear I would suspect your driveline.
OR are you are saying it makes the sound when you move the shifter?

Sorry I mean that it makes that sound when I actually move the shifter by hand. With each gear that it goes through in order to get to the intended gear, you get a very loud clank.

Could you have someone (that you trust) shift it for you while you are under the truck?

i would assume its with the engine on it makes those sounds at least i would think that since thats the only time i use the shifter but you never know. but just move the shifter with the engine off see what it does, iv had u joints and a sloppy rear do that before

Ok I will try with the engine off, and on. And I'll get someone to shift it while I look at it. Then I'll report back on my findings.

If it has been with it on, it is most likely going to be your u-joints or your pinion, or possibly your trans mount.  Something is loose in your drivetrain if you are hearing this over the engine running across the parking lot.
