i've got a 86 k5 blazer witha 305, and a 700r4 in it, curious about driving it with the overdrive in town. was told this could burn out the transmission. thanks

I'm not an "expert" by any means. But, if your transmission is in good working order, and has been maintained properly, there's no reason not to utilize O.D. for in-town driving, as well as highway driving. I have a 700R4 in my truck, and use O.D. in-town driving. (gives you better fuel economy). -Just my $.02 ;D

Whoever told you that was a chooch

I run in OD at speeds as low as 35 mph. It's good for gas mileage and, as far as I know, not bad for the trans at all.
I guess if you were shuttling between 3rd and 4th over and over or tapping the brake alot (which would unlock the TCC), it would be bad. But both of these situations would only occur in heavy city traffic which is rough on any auto trans.
I would just pop it in OD and not give it a second thought.

Its like a well known engine builder once told me "If turning your carb upside down hurts it you have more problems" I would imagine driving in OD is much the same if using it burns it up it was junk to begin with.

When I bought my k5 I also had a 305 and 700r4, after four months the 700r4 burnt to a chrisp. Heres the thing, theres a 3 or 4 pin connector on I believe the right side of the trans just above the oil pan. Make sure there is a connector plugged in. Mine didn't have anything plugged in. This connector controls the lock up in the converter.
I'm guessing my converter never locked up and just kept slipping creating tons of heat and finally burning up my 3-4 clutch pack. So if one day you lose 3rd and 4th gear you'll know why. I decided to just drive it in 1st and 2nd after that and eventually the trans wouldn't move in any gear and I junked it for a th400.

Ive heard towing in OD was bad if it has to change from 3rd to 4th a lot but when just driving it in a city they usually don't reach OD. even newer trucks have a "tow hall" button that changes the shift points while towing
-
another question, the truck seems to shift really late, i know it has 3:73 gears in it, but even with that to me it seems to shift late. im not to sure tho from my understanding the entire truck was rebuilt tranny and all, even the tcase is brand new. could it possibly be because its not set up right? i had read something about a tv cable that should be set up from the tranny to the carb. when in OD the shifts seem to be later aposed to just in D or 3rd i should say. the truck seems to shift better. thanks

I know with my 4l60e the od shift late almost as to be just crusing for it to shift

Say that again?

sure...
I know with my 4l60e the od shift late almost as to be just cruising for it to shift
lol forgot some grammer but my trans the over drive seams to only be used if I'm just cruising like it kicks down with just a little bit of acceleration

Your TV cable is probably too tight

O/D should kick in until 35-40 MPH regardless.
I always leave my tranny in O/D....unless I am towing around tow.
