Title: ignitoin troubles
Post by: 87454westernhauler on May 11, 2010, 08:57:50 am
i have an 87 chevy 350 TBI 4 speed custom deluxe with posi. i just got it running for the first time in about 10 years, and now it is not firing. already checked fuses, tested the ignition coil and it is getting and putting power out. i took the distributor cap off and it is getting power out to the end of the rotar with my tester. I could turn the rotar just a tinrey bit when i had the ignition on and it would create a spark and the fuel injectors would spry out a big stream of fuel. do you guys think that it is just the distributor and cap, or something else? do not want to get into big $ with truck trying to get it running.

Did you check for spark at the plugs? Im guessing your using fresh fuel as well?

How did you get it running? Have you changed out the plugs? My brother had that same problem w/his Harley once, we checked everything and couldn't figure it out so for the fun of it we just put new plugs in and it fired right up and ran perfect.

Do you have a code reader that you can put on it to see if it's throwing any codes?
Sitting 10 yrs could have done a number of things. One possible problem might be deteriorated vacuum hoses.

it is fresh gas, the reason it quit running 10 years ago was the fuel pump, tank, and injectors were bad and i have replaced all of them. i have pulled all of the spark plugs in it and they look almost new, and i had it running for about a week before it did this little spaz. i am goingto try and get a new rotar and cap for it in the next couple of days, but i may or may not have a problem with the rotar coming off, i tried to pull it off but it seems to be stuck, is there a screw or bolt on them???

No  set screw or anything. Sounds like corrosion has it stuck. Can you hit it with a spray lube with a plastic tube on it?

grip the rotor with some channel lock pliers, then tap the pliers with a hammer. She'll come up.  It just slides on and off. Don't twist though, there is a flat surface to one side of it.
