Title: Oil Capacity??
Post by: JC_32 on May 11, 2010, 11:04:35 pm
Seems like a dumb topic, but the capacity on my truck seems odd?
I have an '87 chevy swb w/5.7 350 TBI. On any normal day I would think this truck takes 4 qts but I am stumped b/c at 5 qts I'm still a quart low?? Yep that's right 6 quarts? Now, I read Autozones website that these motors with a large pan takes 6 quarts but can't tell if mines large other than it takes 6 qts to fill?

Can anyone shed some light here?

If it has the larger pan it will take about 6 qts.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Any quick way to determine, other than the amount of Earl I put in it, that it's a larger pan, like a marking or stamp ect?

i don't think there would be a stamp unless your familiar with the size of normal oil pans i don't think you will be able to tell the difference in 2 qts. is it a stock dip stick?

So, I guess my question would be, does anyone else on this board have this truck with the same oil cap?
I guess the other thing I'm wondering is, is this stock?  The autozone print makes me think so?

I'll try to post some pics of the pan and dipstick?

Why don't you just add oil until it reads full on the dipstick?

I have, it's full but putting in that 5th & 6th quart freaks me out.
Last thing I want to do is run this motor with too much oil in it and F it up?
