Title: 73-80
Post by: hotrod24 on May 12, 2010, 05:10:21 pm
How do you know if a cab is a 73-80 from the interior and the cowl if it has a had a 81-87 front clip put on it?

somebody might be able to explain it better but if it is a 73-80 cab they would have to cut slots for the hood hinges and it should have alignment pegs for the hood in that area as well. I also believe that 73-78(could be wrong on year) had the vin tags on the door jam below the door latch rather than on the dash. Also, if they did put a new front end on the truck then they would also have to drill new mounting holes for the windshield wiper posts.

Its at least a 80 or its been changed over to fit that hood check were the vin plate is at in the door jam or on the dash but you will find it when you go to post the vin anyway if the vin is 13 didgets long its a 73-80 any more and its older if its a 73-80 check the 6th didget if its really a 78 it will be a 8

The windshield washer switch gives it away....

It's on the dash, last put there for '83.  In '84 it went onto the column.

It is a pre 83 cab, for sure.

Oh, and 1969 and later should have the vin on the dash.

Looking at the truck from these lousy pics the cab is brown n the doors are blue.Which could mean the cab is 81-3 and the doors are a possible from the 78 this guy says it is.Unless you have the vin from the title/registration i still say the truck is 81-3.

thanks
pat

well he did say it was on the jam but the doors are from a mid 70 style due to the vent window latch kit it doesn't have a push button they came out in 80 but like you said the doors are blue while the cab is brown so that means nothing

1973-1978 trucks had the VIN on the door jab, 79-80 trucks had them on the dash.

The truck looks like a conglomoration of parts.
Dash is 75-83
Seat is Post 81
Steering wheel is 81-83
Speedo is 85MPH version which is 80-83
Tailgate is a 77-80
Frame is a 73-80 (solid crossmembers)
VIN is 73-78
doors are 77-83
Vent latch is post 81.

Look at the hinge mounting area and you can elimininate the 81-83.  If it is "cut" open, it is a 73-80.  Same goes for the wiper area.

Based on what you have pictured It is possible it is a 78 with alot of 81-87 parts put on it.

yep it would be a 79-80 81-87 and the bed does have dual tanks or did because the truck only has one

http://www.nhtsa.gov/DOT/NHTSA/Rulemaking/Articles/Associated%20Files/newManf.pdf

"The VIN for passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, low-speed vehicles, and trucks of 10,000 lbs. or
less gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) must be located inside the passenger compartment and readable,
without moving any part of the vehicle, through the vehicle glazing (windshield) from outside the vehicle
adjacent to the left windshield pillar. This is commonly called the “public VIN.”"

Since 1969.....
http://www.thebiglot.com/vinInformation.asp -
"1969 and Newer cars will have the VIN on the drivers side dash viewable through the windshield"

In 1981 they went to the standardized world VIN format of 17 characters...that is prolly what you are thinking about.

My cousins 73 K5 ad Uncles 75 both had the vin on the dash, as well as my 75 Camaro.

well I guess gm might have broken a few laws then lol. Read what Chris said above a couple post.  Not saying gm didn't put them in the dash on cars doesn't the older vets have them in a strange place also. But on our trucks the first 5 years or so they were in the jam I have a couple friends that took mid 80s cabs and put a dash cover on to cover the vin slot then remount a mid 70s vin in the jam just to get historic tags

For what it is worth...All the square bodies that I have had, the vin was on the dash. I never knew that they came on the door post until I saw a few on this site.
Title: Re: 73-80

73-78 = VIN on drivers door jamb, 79-87 = drivers side dash...simple as that fellas.  Gauges indicate 70's model, steering wheel indicates late 70's and newer.  If the VIN is on the door jamb, then it makes it a 78 or older.

Impossible...ALL 73-78 GM light duty trucks/Blazers/Burbs had them on the drivers door jamb.  Either you are wrong on the years of those trucks, or they have had "work" done to them after GM rolled them off the line.
