Title: Electric fan questions
Post by: beastie_3 on May 16, 2010, 08:45:27 pm
I put in a aluminum radiator today, sweet.  ;D It was almost an inch shorter than the stock one, no big deal, got it to work. This is where I got it, it was a little cheaper when I bought it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120479345979&viewitem=

The whole setup came with two electric fans, which I haven't put them on yet. I was looking at the fan connectors, and it didn't come with the female ends. Does anyone know of a site that might have something that works? Local parts stores were no help, and I emailed the seller and he said they don't come with them. I would rather find matching connectors instead of buying a complete set and rewiring them.

Lastly, I want to wire them up, obviously, to a thermostat switch. Can I put the thermostat where the yellow arrow is? Any suggestions on a kit? What temperature settings should I be looking for, as in when it comes on, when it shuts off? With the old radiator, I ran the flex fan without a shroud, and as you can see in a earlier pic, it is far from the radiator. Ive never had any cooling problems with it being so far away. Would this kit be good? On 200, off 185 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-890016/?rtype=10

I put some female crimp connectors on the spades on mine. I think where either of your arrows will be fine.

I would rather have connectors.

I can't see your pics but is this the pigtail you are looking for?

Just get an adjustable thermostatic relay control. You can set the temp at which you want the fan to come on.

That plug is close. The fan wiring has the male ends, and the two ends are not separated by the plastic divider, as in the picture. Basically, I need the other end. I guess it wouldnt matter if the female end has a divider between the two terminals. Ill browse that site and see if I can find it.

If I were to get the adjustable thermostat, what would be the recommend settings?

Thats weird I wired up an electric fan a few months ago my fan came with all connections I ordered it from summit. I havent fired it up yet so I couldnt recommend temp settings. But I would think I would want mine to kick on a bit after 200 and off at 195 or so. You can probably never get it below 195 once she is warm.

I believe Radio Shack (or "The Shack") has what you are looking for.

My temp sensor for the fan relay is 3/8" npt but the hole in the intake is larger. I wanted to know where to get an adapter, but I found one at the hardware store.

if you still haven't found your connector i would take the fan up to radio shack and tell them you need the other end they should be able to get that style molex connector

Or, if you can't find the other side of that particular connector, just cut it off and attach a whole new molex connector. Just a thought, vs going crazy trying to find half of a particular part.

Thats what Im going to do. I saw some GM alternator wire extensions which are pretty thick. Going to cut them up and wire them in and then loom it all. I just installed my thermostat relay kit the other day. Im waiting for a electric fan bracket kit to arrive and we'll see if that works.

Just get an adjustable thermostatic relay control. You can set the temp at which you want the fan to come on.

This is the female end of the plug, if you read the description. I believe it has the same terminals as our headlight plugs.

I already have the other wires. Even though the description says female, the pic shows male terminals. No biggie...

I FINALLY got around to mounting my fans. I had originally ordered a Derale fan mount kit, but it wouldn't work with the fans I have, so down to the hardware store I went and got 4 feet of 3/4" 12g steel strips. (I saw some pics that Fitz posted and stole the idea) I bent the ends over and screwed them into the top and bottom of the radiator (don't worry, there is a extra lip for this purpose as you can see in the pics). I used countersink bolts and locknuts to bolt the fans to the strips. The fans came with the nylon "zip ties" and foam pads. I used the foam pads in between the steel strips and the core. It is all wired up now, I used a Derale adjustable thermostat relay kit. All I need to do now is add coolant and hook up one wire to a ignition 12v source. Ill take another pic of it all installed (it was dark when I finished).

And here is a toy truck I found in the toy box at my grandpas for when kids come over. I want to take it!

lol you should paint the truck to match yours. Nice work on the fans.

Fans installed, coolant topped off, adjusted thermostat but I need to really dial it in. Ill be keeping a screwdriver with me for awhile.

So how do you like that huge open space between the engine and radiator?  Gives you a lot more room to work and move about the engine bay.

Looks real clean. Carrying a spare hose clamp on the thermostat housing?

Da67 ya its nice to have that room and not worry about cutting a finger off with the mechanical fan.

Grim- ya I was a Boy Scout "Always be prepared." Forgot to take it off.

What did you end using for the pigtails?

This

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PCO-5434PT/ but I bought them at Kragen/Orileys

I bought two of them, cut them in half so that I could invert them and use the plugs for the quick connect.

Beastie, I am interested on how it works after you get it all dialed in, I want to do this on my rebuild.

Its winter (even Cali gets cold) so I wont know for awhile, but the radiator itself is already overkill plus adding two 12 in fans. I dont see the fans coming on much. It works good so far, adjusted the fans to come on around 210 or so right now.

Beastie, I hope to not jinx you...using larger fans (maybe even stagered one up & one down) or some sort of a shroud to encase the whole core would be a better plan. Hopefully you will get away with it, but I'm looking at the amount of rad. core not having air pulled across it, that's quite a bit. Not to nit-pick, but just to give a "heads up" if you see a problem come the hotter weather, you may be able to just make a plenum from side to side, top to bottom. Also you have to look at the CFM rating on electric fans...they are not all rated the same way by each manufacture. Some use a box type thing with a given hole area to pull through, other manufactures just use the fan only. One word of caution, it takes amperage to turn a fan blade through air. If you see a low amp draw with a high CFM, better look at how they are "fudging" the numbers to boost sales. Lorne

Agreed, if you find it getting hot make a shroud.

So your thinking two 12in fans might not be enough? Supposedly they are rated at 1400cfm each. I'll keep an eye on the temps though.

If you look at my first post, you can see how far away my flex fan was and no shroud, and I never had overheating problems.
