Title: Couple questions

I will be pulling my engine this weekend and have lost the bolts that secure it to the engine stand. Does anybody know what length, size and grade? I am assuming grade 8 or above.

Next...I am looking to put a bigger manual in my 72 C10, what are the pro's and con's of the following. (it will have a built 400 in front of it and will see abuse)

T10
Muncie
T5
T56
NV3500
NV4500

Not real educated on the different types listed above or power ratings. The Muncie came behind higher horse big blocks so I would assume it could take it.

The transmissions you listed fall into at least four different categories.  Old school performance (T10, Muncie), modern performance (T5, T56), standard truck (NV3500), and heavy duty truck (NV4500).

Of these I can definitely tell you that you won't want to use a T5 or an NV3500 behind a built 400 (they are too weak).  But as far as the others go, you need to ask youself what your priorities are.  Is OD important?  Is hauling heavy loads important?  Is quick smooth shifting important?  Would you prefer wide ratios or tight ratios?

If it were me, I'd go with a T56 in a heartbeat.  Stock, the Viper version can handle anything a street performance 400 can throw at it.  And if you ever need more, they can be built to handle 800+ lb-ft.  But, with this trans, the truck would become strictly a hot rod as it would no longer be able tow anything of significance.

I think you'll find the bolts to be 3/8-16 nc x 3 1/2 " long. Actually, grade 5 is strong enough. But Grade 8 doesn't cost that much more. You only need 4 of em.
 Like "event" said-the T56 is awesome.( 6 speed). The Muncie 4 speed M22 rockcrusher is too.

Oh, I failed to notice (remember) that your truck is a K10.  Well if you want to retain 4WD that limits your choices to SM456 and NV4500.  IMO, neither will be satisfying as a "performance" trans, but they allow 4WD, will haul heavy loads, and can survive behind a street 400 (NV4500 would be better here).

Don, thanks for the specs on those bolts..looks like I will be making a trip to Fastenal!

This will not be for my 81 K10....this manual swap is going to be for my 72 C10 SWB.

It will not see any towing duties, thats what my DD is for. This will be a full bore hot rod for me to play with.

I have a basic concept of the above transmissions, just didn't know the power handling capabilities of each. I would love to find a rockcrusher, but they are scarce around here..even the plain old Muncie's are hard to find.

My initial thought was to go with the T56 for the close ratio so I could bang through the gears pretty quick but didn't know how it would act in a heavy truck. The 72 already has 4.56 gears so I guess that would make up for the weight of the truck on initial takeoff.

I'm just looking for opinions on the different types or if they won't work or hold up to the abuse of a higher horse small block. I'm in no hurry to get this done, just want all the info before I jump into it.

T56 all the way.  That's the trans in the reg cab Dodge Ram SRT10.  500hp  525 lb-ft  5000 lb curb weight. 8)

With a T56 your 4.56's you will be cruising 70 mph at about 1850 rpm (figuring 29" tires).  With a Muncie you'd be screaming along at 3700 rpm. :o
