I want to build a new exhaustsystem for my truck ,surfing arround i saw that the mufflers from thrush are cheaper than flowmaster, do you guys have experience with thrush?
good or bad, sound , performance...?
i want to go for the welded mufflers from thrush or the flowmaster 40 serie
2 pipes going to the rear and each with a muffler .
what would be the best choice?
-
I prefer the tail pipes exit after the rear axle and turn L&R I used to use thrush mufflers when I was younger and had no money but they never lasted and always lost their tone. Flowmasters sound great, but if you look on summit's website you'll see lots of options
http://www.summitracing.com/search/Part-Type/Mufflers/Universal/Yes/Outlet-Quantity/Single/Case-Shape/Oval/?keyword=muffler
-
thx for the reply,
i will go for the flowmasters.
-
i have the thrush welded on my truck. just put them on with the new motor about a month ago. dual exhaust. exit out the back. i love them so far...just my 2 cents
-
I love the tone of anything I've put Flowmasters on. They've never lost their tone or lost structural intergrity.
-
Flowmasters are horrid for restriction in the exhaust system. Google flowmaster and restriction, you will have lots of reading. Get Dynomax for a nice sound and free flowing exhaust.
-
If you are against flowmaster check out the Edelbrock mufflers
-
Yeah, that is true. If you really want good flowing mufflers, look towards what the turbo guys are running. They seem to find the best flowing mufflers. Usually Dynomax and Magnaflow.
-
I bought some flowmasters 40 series
next sunday we're gonna weld the exhaust with stainless steel tubes.
-
Just finished my exhaust today. Dual 2.5 with H pipe, 40 series, sounds awesome! Got tired of the Magnaflow sound.
-
I think they flowmasters sound good, but they are pretty restrictive. I don't like the drone they have at certain RPMs but other than that, they sound good. If you're looking for a free flowing exhaust you can do something like the Borla XR-1, PYPES Race Pros, Hooker Aerochamber muffler, or the bullets.

There are a lot of 10 second cars out there running Flowmasters.
-
i saw a gearz where they put a flowmaster up against a cherry bomb vortex on a flow machine and the flowmaster only flowed like 2/3 what the cherry bomb did.
-
Comparing a muffler that is straight through vs a muffler that has baffles is ridiculous. Of course the straight through muffler is going to flow more. I think people get Flowmasters for their sound, not flowing capabilities. Granted, Flowmaster is better than stock, but something like Magnaflow is going to flow much better. My truck came with Flows, I switched to Magnaflow, and just switched back. It is all personal preference.
-
I was giving more options. I have flowmasters on my truck, i dont like the drone of them at certain RPMS. No need to get bent out of shape. I seen another post where less restrictive mufflers were brought up. Why didnt you jump on that post? I'm done
-
I'm not bent out of shape. I wasnt talking to you, I was referring to 78's post, but even then, I wasn't attacking him. I was talking about the comparison he saw on gearz. Even though the Vortex has that divider in it, it is still a lot more "straight through" than a Flow.
I SEEN that post too.

ShawnT you're the one getting bent out of shape here. Calm down. Everyone here is entitled to their opinions.

JDaniel, get it all setup yet?

I love the sound of the series 40 Flowmasters. I just had one put on my work truck (08 Silverado) and love it. It finally sonds like a truck. I have a Dynomax muffler on my 01 Crewcab with the 8.1 that was put on against my preference because the exhaust guy thought I wouldnt like the drone sound you refer to. I hate the Dynomax muffler. This is a big, badboy truck and the wifes suburban sounds more agressive. If it was heavily modified, I would be concerned about restriction, but anything is better than stock, I like the sound, and have a set that have been on the truck for 15 years and still look good.It will be replaced with the Flowmasters as soon as possible, or maybe the Edelbrock mufflers as Vile mentioned, but I like a truck to sound like a truck, not a Honda. If I can hear the tires over the exhaust, it isnt right for me.
-
I have the Thrush welded muffler on my dually right now. It's VERY similar to the flowmaster muffler as far as looks and sounds identical. I've had it on about 2 years now I think. It's stupid loud...at this point I'd trade it for a stock muffler or something close. Ours is the single 3" in and dual 2.5 out and it's dumped under the truck. I can hear my truck coming from about a quarter mile away...sometimes further. I also don't have any cat converters, so that contributes to the loudness. Overall though it sounds good and like I said identical to flowmaster. I might be able to get a sound clip if you want. Just let me know.

The cherry bomb isn't totally straight through... its not the glasspack its a turbo muffler too. It is more straight through than most turbo mufflers though. I agree, I think they mostly get them for sound too though. They're not bad mufflers or anything like that... flowmasters cant be too bad with all the people running them.
-
It looks straight through to me, with the exception of the divider. What im saying is it isnt chambered like the flow or have S turns like their turbo muffler. Plus the OP was comparing Thrush vs Flow, not Cherry bomb vs flow.
-
exhaust is done
flowtech headers left and right(with a balance pipe between the 2) going to the back each trough a flowmaster 40 series and come out just before the rear wheels.
sound is great ,love it

Awesome!

Here a pic of my exhaustsystem (made it myself)
-
Not bad. I had to use headmans S bends to clear my transmission crossmember because my headers dump in a weird spot/angle. I also used some aluminum colored ceramic spray paint to paint everything. I think it makes it look a bit better and it covers up the welds.
-
Maybe I'm a little slow, but I can't for the life of me see how anything with any type of baffles or anything in the flow stream can out flow a glass pack that is straight through. No way. It's just like putting your thumb over the end of a garden hose. When does more water flow from the hose? With your thumb over the hole or the hole left wide open? Just my 2 cents.
One more thing. Ever notice in lots of muffler adds they say for example; "20% more flow for more power and torque". They never say 20% more compared to what. A stock muffler? A glasspack? A tailpipe with a potato in it? A brick? Well, that makes my 4 cents now.

Well I encourage you to do some research then. When you put your thumb over the end of the garden hose what happens to the jet stream of water? Does it increase it's velocity? Does it increase it's pressure? How does this effect your desired goal? If you run your tap water and stick your finger underneath the flow of water what happens? If you put the corner of the rounded part of your finger into the sream of water what happens? Why do people port and polish heads? Why do we make intake and exhaust sytems with bends in them? Why are some runners longer than others? Why do we run different size tubes? Why have a dual plane intake instead of a single plane? Why have variable intake geometry? With research and study you will see that the effects of different mufflers and headers and diameters etc you can gain HP. It's not snake oil when flow technology and dyno results show that the end result is a positive gain.
-
I never thought to compare the exhaust to a water hose. That actually makes sense. I guess the hard part is figuring out at what point does the restriction hinder the velocity.
-
I am going to run Hooker Areo Chambers Mufflers. I love the sound of them! Probably in 3" in and out dumped at the rear axle. Go to u-tube and search them they sound mean! GGGRRRRRRR.......
-
I put a set of them on an 82 K5 with a 454 BBC and it sounded like a garbage truck. You might not like them in real life.
-
I've herd them on a 327 here in town that is built similar to my engine and I think they sound way better than slowmasters........ Just my opinion! I have herd them on some big blocks on u-tube that didn't sound as good TO much GGGRRR...... lol!

Here's a vid of some guy with aerochambers

This is the only vid I think I have of the flows on my 74 unless I find a few more

It sounds like to me you have a stronger running engine than the other guy!http://www.holleytv.com/video/1598 (http://www.holleytv.com/video/1598)
You have to admit they sound good on this bad boy!
-
To get back to the original subject. I owned thrush mufflers in 2 1/2" on my 74 AMC Matador and changed to 3" Flows! The flows were better in everyway!!! IMO

When you see the difference in price of the 2 ,the flowmaster is more expensive , it's not only the name that you pay more ,also quality ,that's my opinion.
about sound ,that's just personal taste i guess.
grtz

Yeah, they all sound way better than stock!!! Its just something to bench race about.......

I have done some research. Maybe that's why I'm a little confused. I understand that porting and polishing heads makes them flow better. I understand bends and different lengths of runners. To keep them equal length. I understand why we have dual plane and single plane intakes. I don't know anything about variable intake geometry. I also understand that exhaust gases travel through your exhaust pipes as pulses when each cylinder is fired. I also understand that if you run too big an exhaust pipe you will slow down those pulses and and make less power. I guess I just get a little lost on the downstream side of the engine. If you have everything flowing along nicely with the correct sized exhaust pipe and you put a restriction, then you lose some of what you worked so hard to gain. If you use the water pipe example, yes, the water downstream of your thumb does indeed speed up because it is taking a pressure drop across an orifice basically. But the water upstream of your thumb slows down and builds pressure. This would be in the engine. I wasn't trying to make anyone mad. Sorry if I did.

Actually, you get a little boost downstream with the restriction.
Exhaust cools as it travels away from the exhaust port, and slows. A slight restriction will speed it back up

There's lots of good info and sound clips on many of the muffler manufacturers. ex
http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/index.php?cat=1
I am actually writing curriculum specifically on exhaust technology as we speak. When you choose a muffler the most important thing to most people is the sound both inside and out. Dyno results by comparrison from one muffler to the other aren't going to show huge differences in performance mufflers.

I had a set of Flowmaster 40s on a 69 once and at about 35 to 40 MPH the resonance inside the cab would hurt your eardrums. It would just roar like being inside a drum. I hated driving through the city limits of our little town.
-
wow that's a great looking back end, with the polished louvered tailgate band, awesome looking.
I have to 2nd the interior drone, it is there and is annoying to some. Dad had a flow 40 on his truck and had bad drone, he hated it, I was cool with it, he has cherry bomb extremes now and it does have some, not as bad or as much as the flow 40 he had. It was an original 40 series, not delta flow or anything.
Here's a video of the cherry bomb extremes....
