just as the title says i am lifting my 86 k20 4in and was wondering if anyone is not running there sway bar and if so is the body roll bad or is it not that bad i use to own a toyota with 5in no front sway bar and i owned a jeep that was everywere with out it. any help to decide what i wanna do

What are you looking to do? Get more articulation? Some suspension companies sell drop brackets for the sway bar, right where it mounts to the crossmember. I would think that with such a large truck, it would tend to have more roll, but I can't say for sure because mine is in there.

my friend took his out of his 04 Silverado ext cab that was bagged and said it made it practically uncontrollable at 60+ and he couldnt tow anything without it.

Rather than eliminating it completely, why not retrofit an electric disconnect like the new jeeps have?

I have a 85 K20 with a 4" Rough Country Lift that had no sway bar in it when i bought it. I want to put one on it just so that it is there but, i have had a quad in the bed and my trailer hooked to the back wich is 8x16 and that was loaded with quads and had no problem. I havent really noticed any of body roll and when towing i am able to keep up with traffic at 70 on the expressway.

Have you ever needed to make quick steering maneuvers? That is really when you will know if you need one or not.

I took mine out of my C-20 last Saturday and cleaned and painted it. I was going to replace the bushings because they were getting worn. Couldn't find any 1/16" so I didn't put it back yet. It handled better with the sway bar and worn bushings than it does with no sway bar. Will indeed put it back.

I don't have one on my truck. But it should unless your rock crawling put it in the springs tend to flex a little plus with a lift and tires you probably shouldn't be taking turns all to fast

i think i am going to leave it out and see how she handles now i hope i can get a sticker stupid mass lift laws i may have to take the body lift out and make a trans tunnel i am running a 4x2 cab so we will see thanks for the post greatly appreciated

you can take a hammer to the cab were the transfercase hits that will fix it ;D usually lift laws have to do with the bumper hight some deal with headlight/ tail light hight. ma looks a little slow on that
To find out Max Ht, use Formula Max Ht=Wheelbase x Wheel Track divided by 2200; so if you came out with 2, then you are allowed a increase in 2" tire size & increase lift of 2" for a total of 4"

i have not run without a sway bar, and would not like to. the truck, especially with a body lift, can develop a lot of roll, and may compromise stability on the highway, or even a back road taking a corner to fast. as was said, if its an offroad truck only, then by all means, run without it. if it is driven on the road, put it back in.
as far as the mass laws, how big of a suspension lift do you have? body lift (i assume) is 3". Mass runs on the formula that Irish wrote, but it is a gray area. if the truck looks proportional, and isnt ridiculous (I.e. 44" tires, and 12" lift), they usually pass it.

If you're running a lifted truck with oversize tires, cornering abilities are kinda a moot point anyhow. If you want more articulation ditch it. If you truck sees more black top than dirt that could be a different story but usually as stiff as aftermarket lift springs are it won't be terrible.
But you should ditch the body lift anyhow, your cab mounts will thank you.

i am running a 4in suspension and 3 body but i may be taking the body out and putting a 1in in and as for the sway bar disconnect it is being shipped to me in a few days that is what i was looking for thanks alot and yes mass lift laws suck i am running stock 225-75-16s for the inspection and maybe that will get me through

4 in lift and whaat size tires? budy of mine has a 86 with 6 inch lift and 38's, and he passed inspection about 2 months ago. (i still think he greased someones pocket, but he has a valid sticker.) bring it in with some 33's or so on it so it looks proportional and hope for the best. better yet, stop by the inspection station and as the guy about it. never hurts to ask!

I put that offroad design kit on my dune truck. I don't intend on disconnecting my sway bar but I liked what I was reading about eliminating binding issues when alternating the stock lift. I have sway bar drop mounts but it still made sence to me that if the spring can travel farther back than stock it will fight itself with the sway bar trying to keep it forward, this kit lets it swivel and I really like mine.

ok so i drove the truck for the first time after i lifted it it has a problem with the steering it floats like crazy down the road has anyone put pinon shims in to correct this problem or does anyone now how to solve this issue

I got rid of my swaybar while installing my 4" lift and i don't find it that bad at all. I also have the sway bar taken off of my 98 K1500 too so i"m a little used to it. Overall though it doesn't roll as bad as i thought it would considering i have a 6.2L, TC EZ ride front springs and no sway bar lol.

i did a 4" lift about a month ago.
use some 1/2 ton rear spring new front hangers and rear shackles and a cross over kit.
steering was supper sloppy, lathargice and and generally un-responsive to inputs
found out that the longer leaf spring 52" vs 48 were flexing side to side. all tie rod end and spring bushing are brand new. with the steering i could "flex" the spring enough to move the frame 1/2" to the left or right in relation to the axle.. created all sorts of steering/tracking issues
so i built a engine cross member and track bar that went from the DS frame to the PS axle between the PS side spring mount and spindle.

it also could be bias ply tires they usually will flex before you get any responce in steering

do you have any pics of the crossmember you made i would be interested to see them if you do i am running 33s right now i am going to go to 37s though once the steering is solved
