Has anyone ever cut something that was chromed and then noticed that shortly after the chrome starts peeling off? I would like to know if anyone has any awesome way to keep this from happening. I plan on putting driving lights in my bumper and i have just put a from receiver that is accessible through a flip down license plate. Both of which i needed to cut and drill hole through the chrome. I am hoping someone has a way to keep my bumper looking good for years to come. So the question is: is there anyway to keep chrome from peeling after its been penetrated? Thanks in advance.

I don't know from experience, but i suspect that the cut edge is just getting oxidized as its unprotected and spreading under the chrome. I think if you mask off the chrome and brush on some good primer/paint on the bare steel edge it would be fine.

Chrome is chrome I don't think you can just add something and it will hold up. Talk to a bike shop or a chrome shop see what they say I want to say the only Option is to re-chrome

Seeing as chrome is just a coating, i think as you are cutting it, its possible that it will peel off then. Depending on how hot you get the steel. I see, as stated by Irish_Alley only option is to re-chrome. Or buy a new paintable bumper and paint it whatever color you want.

I don't know how to keep chrome from peeling, but, to keep a chevy from peeling is to put in a ford engine--peel out baby!

I found the best way to keep chrome looking good is to keep it on the shelf at the Autozone, "Go Fast Aisle" and not on my truck.

yeah whats that the triple coat chrome
blaz you don't think that chrome on a bumper being high quality will stand up to being cut/heat on

I'm gonna use a rubber gasket/grommet for a trailer light and silicone to seal where i cut the chrome in an attempt to keep moister out from behind the plating. As for the driving lights I think the same thing will work, but will have to wait and see. I will post pics when I finish buttoning it up. Going to junkyards on sat and swap meet on Sunday so i'll get back to truck on Monday.

Seen it rust if you cut it but not really peel.

I would try to tape it up while you cut it and or use lubrication when you're cuttin it.

Plasma cutter made short work of chrome and left the rest intact and unscathed. I applied the gasket and silicone and i think its good to go for quite a while.
