Title: Couple questions about the 10 bolt??
Post by: jefferias on June 12, 2010, 03:57:49 pm
hi everyone!  i have an 84 c10 350/350 and a 10 bolt rear with 3.08's.  i noticed my pinion seal was starting to leak, so i bought a new seal and researched a lil bit.  I put the seal in last night. this was how i did it.  1 disconnect driveshaft
2  mark the flange for u-joint and 2 punch marks on nut and pinion shaft. counted threads  showing as well
3 raise vehicle and measured about 12inch pounds on the pinion nut
4 remove nut and remove companion flange
5 remove seal, clean all necessary things
6 install seal, lube lips with grease
7 install companion flange with sealant on splines
8 install washer and pinion nut(lots of blue loctite) with impact gradually till i measured 13 inch pounds.
          9 reinstall driveshaft
--so all is well so far, no leaks or noises but only put on like 10 miles.   my question is-- i tried to pull the front pinion bearing just to inspect it and couldnt get it off all trhe way so i just put everything back togetther. my bro thinks it shouldnt be floating the way it was-as i could move it back and forth maybe 3/4 inch. i said its fine and got pressed back on the pinion shaft with torqueing the pinion nut.  so should the bearing be loose like that or pressed on. like i said so far the fix seems to be absolutley fine. hope you guys can solve this for me and thanks in adavnce.  sorry so long of a post!!

lube lips with grease

How'd that taste?

The pinion bearing gets preloaded by tightening the pinion nut with the companion flange installed

You used an impact to get 13 in lb?

it was luibriplate-yum yum     and yes impact was needed- as that pinion nut has 3 spots that "lock" on the pinion shaft thats why its so tight- but the rolling resistance was a different story(13"lbs).  thankz vile, i figured i was fine--i will keep posted if anything happens.

Just make sure your witness marks are lined up

when i got to the witness marks it was a bit shy of my torque measurement so i went a tad extra to make up for the drag on the new seal.  thankz man!!

You shouldn't have any issues then. Good luck
