just rolled over 500 miles on newly built 350, .040, comp 268xe cam, vortec heads, sick of the th350 trans and want something for cruising but still able to punch the crap out of it from time to time, its in a 83... want to go 700r4 but what rear end would be good for this transmission....i have 245-50-17s in the rear now, i think they are around 27 inches tall, if this helps...

I have committed myself to putting in a 3.42 or 3.55 for all my vehicles. I have 4.10 with 33s behind my 700 and 1st is basically useless, i go down my driveway in 2nd or 3rd.

3.42:1 or 3.73:1 if you wanna fry tire more
-
I agree with Vile.... If you do alot of hwy 342 if not go 373.
-
Ditto. 3.42 would be your best bet in my opinion.
-
I'd be all over the 3:42's with your combo. And some sort of street friendly posi unit too. That way I could buy twice as many tires. LOL
-
I'd go 3.73. The 0.70 overdrive in that 700R4 gives a healthy 2.61 final drive ratio when O/D is engaged with a 3.73. And if you ever go with a taller tire, you will want the 3.73. Plus it makes it more snappy around town.
How do you like your motor combo?

I have a 700R4 with a 3.73. I love it. Plenty of bottom end with good cruising speed. You better have Posi though! ;D

I have 3.73 with Eaton Posi Traction, part #4559, with my 700R4. First gear is almost useless though. Good low RPM's cruising down the highway.
