Title: Front Clip Preference
Post by: slammed79 on June 19, 2010, 11:50:00 pm
I'm coming close to start making cosmetic decisions for the 73 Jimmy, the first of these is what generation front clip I want to go with. Since I'm going to shave the firewall first, it makes sense to set up the clip if I go with a later model.
Part of me wants to go with the stock clip, but another part wants to with a 91 Chevy clip, I need some imput.

Thanks folks in advance.

I say keep the 73-80 clip.  The next one I get will be from that era.

If it's a 73 definitely keep it 73-74 which is unique all by itself.

If it is 4wd, I would say stick with the 73-74, if is 2wd I'd say do a newer clip as 2wd's werent even available in the later years.

Thanks vile, I need to double check myself after beers. It's going to be a bagged 2wd roadster. I like the 73 and 74 front end, the grille is the best looking of the years, the only reason I'm debating it is I've still got the stock front end on my truck.

Of course I could swap the truck over to a later front clip... oh the possibilities.

The 73-75 blazers and jimmy's are falling off the map. Keep that in mind. You have a unique ride, especially being 2wd! Don't undo what makes your truck special.

I'm making it a 2wd, I'm slightly hesitant about cutting it up too bad, but at the same time I plan on keeping it for a long time so I may as well bring it to a place where I'll fully enjoy it. Nothing that'll be done will be too difficult to undo if I ever want to put it back to stock

Personally I hate the 91 stuff, I got an 88 with that same basic front clip although it's the newer body style truck and I don't like it. I don't even like the 81-87 styles really, for me it's round headlights all the way.

Round headlights are absolutely the coolest.  No way I would change that over to anything else.

And there are more options for the headlights. Many companies make different style 7" round headlights.  Mine are from Hella and they accept replaceable H4 bulbs so I don't have to change the whole housing when it goes out.

I'd say 88-91.  I find the 73-80 nose to be ugly, but that's just my opinion.

Vile that is purty. I'm now certain Imma stick with a 73-74 front end, I found a clean 74 grille on Cl, now I just gotta figure out if its a bumper or roll pan and I'm torn between sky blue with a light flake or victory red, the color is going to decide bumper or roll pan.

I picked up a frame on Saturday while up in Sho Low, had to rent a trailer to get it back to my storage. Next weekend I'm off to the yards for a xmember and c-arms. I'll have pics in a week or two when I'm back at storage

Do you mean a roll bar in the back or in the front? If you find a 73-80 front roll pan let me know!

Thing is the choices are still wrong.  Should be 73-74, 75-79, 80, 81-88, 89-91 for the broader choices...  there were changes in 81-87 and 75-79, but.....

BUT, I would keep it 73-74..

I was refering more to round headlight vs square headlight vs square side by side Capt. 73-74 is the best looking of the round headlight series, and I'm going to go with that.

Also, I'm pretty sure that AIM makes a front roll pan for the 73-80's, I was going to stop by there after work last night but was there till 7.

Good choice keeping it original.I personally like the 73-80 style. If i ever do another truck it will be that era of years..And perhaps another stepside...

thanks

Mar-k is only making front pans for the 67-72's currently. They used to make them for our trucks but stopped for some reason. They have been getting a lot of requests for them though and may start them up again.

Pat, I miss my 77 stepper alot, that was a dog ugly truck but so much fun. Maybe  I'll get another one down the road. This roadster is going to take up a bit of time and money, I gotta do it quick before my gf wants kids.
