Title: Fill gas tank on 73 long bed, always spill gas down side.
Post by: fbody on June 21, 2010, 06:42:33 pm
is there a fix for this. a possible kink in the hose.. holding the nozzle some weird way, only partial trigger to get gas in takes forever.  what are others doing or experiencing?  passenger side tank, pretty much stock config.  thanks.

Your tank vent is either capped or plugged.

Thanks for asking the question.  Was starting to think I had to live with it also.  It's been low on my priority list of to-do's, but sounds simple enough to check.

Thanks,

MJ

thanks.  where is the tank vent, any pointers you can give me as to where to start poking around.  Is it just a tube that leads off to no where.. a filter end? goes up front somewhere and runs along the frame?

It is on top of the tank, check the tube in the filler neck too.

is this only when it clicks off or during the whole fill time. i can only take my truck to the older pumps w/o the emissions or i have that problem

during the entire fillup.  yea, older pumps, with no boot, will let air out and it doesnt spill.  the air not getting out is the prob, so going to check that vent line.

I've got a 75, and it does the same thing, bought new fill and vent hoses, still leaks down the side of the truck? Someone recommended that I pull back on the rubber boot on the pump, but that made it worse? seems to work best with the hose end facing the door, almost horizontal, and about half throttle. but it sure does seem like forever when filling. I thought maybe it was CA pump thing?

You could have an ideal about how many gallons you need then once you get close slow it down

its not when its full that it spills out, its while your pumping, tank can be empty or half full, doesnt matter. if you give it full pressure, it will run down the side.  the pre unleaded fill necks don't seem to work well with the CA pumps and all their tight boots to keep emissions out of the air.

you are putting the nozzle to far into the filler.  I am guessing you are wanting to put it in and then wait for it to stop (unattended)  Move it out some.

My 74 k10 does the same thing, it doesn't matter if it is part way in or all the way in, you have to go half throttle here in California.  I believe  my the filler tube looks a little smaller than the actual fill hole.  On a side note though, on my trip to Idaho and back, in other states I had no problem at all filling up, only here in California.

Here are some pics for those not familiar with CA nozzles, the first shows what most of you are familiar with, the second is what the more rural areas of CA have, and last, the major pain in the rear that those of us in larger cities in CA have to deal with.

I live in central Kentucky and see the ones with the boots all the time..probably more than I see the older style.  Its not just a California thing.

we used to have the ones in the 3rd pic. Then those stations went to the ones with just the cap thing. I filled up couple days ago, and for the first time had to point it to the door. Maybe a fuel cell will be bought sooner than i was planing on  8)

I have never ever seen the last one before, didn't know such a thing existed. 90% of the pumps up here have the second one and on my boat i just had to stick the nozzle in half way and it was working fine and i could feel and hear the air coming out of the vent but as soon as i stuck it in all the way the nozzle clicked like it was full after putting 5 dollars in a brand new 40 gallon tank.

i was wondering if the filler neck from a newer model would bolt up to those three holes in the body?
