Can someone point me in the right direction here. I have a 1980 P-30 Chevrolet Box truck and the previous owner cut the ignition wires at the key switch and installed some aftermarket type of key switch. I have a new key switch for the truck and the correct plug that plugs into it. The problem is the colors of the wires do not match up correctly. I need a wiring diagram for this P-30 Step Van so I can hook it up correctly. Anybody know where I can turn?????? Thanks in advance for your help.

I would suggest you get a service manual.

I agree with a manual. How many wires are there, and what is each color? Include the color of the stripe, if there is one. Also, look at your starter and see what color wires are going there as well.

I too would like a manual, just don't know where to find one.
The problem is the wires in the harness do not match up to the plug that was left in the truck(assuming it was the original that was cut off). I got one from an earlier step van and those colors are different also. So a diagram would show the pin out of the plug, I hope.

Looks like there is a manual. I just did the hard work for you. Search.

How many wires are there? A service manual would be nice, but with a multimeter I would think you could figure it out. There should be a wire hot all the time, a wire that gets 12v in the acc, on, and start positions. Using the existing switch as a guide with a meter, you should be able to track down which wire goes where. If I was into my column I'd take a picture for you to show the colors.

There are 7 wires and it is not in the column it is in the dash like a van.

Sorry, should've read a little closer.

Ok, got the manual above 35.00 and it says in the index:
Ignition switch operation circuit go to page...................Page 8A-21
Guess what....it stops a 8A-16 then goes to 8B-1, there is no page 8A-21??????
??? ??? ??? ??? ???
Now what???

Call them.

We you can't call them. You have to send an email. I did that and have got no response from them at all. I sent a second email today......
This thing is driving me crazy!

I have a set of Mitchell manuals on CD Rom, I will look to see if they list what you are looking for...
-
Thanks Zieg!!

My manuals on CD-rom only go back as far as 1983, sorry. My old desktop was not being very nice and froze up... It is only 105 degrees in the garage, can't imagine why it did that...
-
Shouldn't have froze lol. Meltdown :D

I know, from the 79 degrees AC to 15 minutes in the garage I had to ring out my shirt... The computer hasn't been fired up in about a year, lucky for me... It is an old Pentium II with Windows 95 but it is the only thing that will run the Mitchel program....

Thanks for trying Zieg maybe it will cool down, See if the earlist year ignition switch plug wiring is there if possible. Maybe it is the same. These didn't change much.
I got to be close, I got it working but the idiot light for the brakes stays on when the key is in the off position. It does have a bad break line. Just trying to get the electrical straightened out first. It was a 400.00 step van with only 60,000 miles so I could not pass it up.

A running, moving storage shed for $400??? Wow wish I could run across one. I will go back later this evening and try it again. I wish I had a printer to work with that machine but it is too old. I guess I am lucky it still starts up...

Yea it was a good deal!! I plan to fix it up alittle and use it for my construction business. It runs like a top and shifts great(4 Speed) just needs breaks/tires and the usual tlc.
