Title: that ugly visor
Post by: thachevythang on July 02, 2010, 10:55:59 am
Yup my p.o. put one hideous visor on and when he did he used 5 huge bolts! He bolted it strait onto the cab roof and on the LH and RH side just before the doors! Everything is bent where he bolted it down! Come to find out that was my problem with the leaking windshield. Looks like he used some kind of silicone sealer instead of replacing the old rubber. So whenever it rains or i wash it water leaks to the inside of the windshield. Now the headliner is in perfect condition and where it meets the windshield it looks fine. Looking through the bolt holes I cant really tell if its rusted or not but its probly started to. Also the trim around the door on the cab he took them off and just put the screws back in and some aren't even on there! What's my best bet on fixing the cab? Should i find a donor or is it possible to weld them up? They arent right on top of the windshield channel so is that a possibility? Oh yeah and just fyi I picked my user name cause it was a gmc tailgate and and steering wheel but chevy grille, moldings, and cab corners! Then to find out its just all gmc probly owned by Edward Scissorhands cause from the inside out its been hacked to bits!!!

ugly visor? if it was the lund ones they aint ugly they look great, we got one on an 84.

You should have put silicone on the bolts like rtv before you put them back in, that'd seal them up, they can be welded shut or maybe you can grind the heads off then put some fiberglass filler over the holes.

I LOATHE visors and I would like to smack the man that invented them. You aren't the only one with a previously owned truck by an owner that got excited every time the new JCWhitney catalog came out. The hacked up bolt holes in your roof can be fixed but you will have to repaint the roof after your body work is done.

And don't forget these little gems from the 80's, when cool factor was directly proportionate to the amount of products you could afford with the LUND logo on it.

lol, that would look so PHAT with a tailgate spoiler and ground effects! Some over the rail diamond plate, some lit up cab handles, some cab length running boards and a FEAR ME sticker in the back window. OH the babes I would get!

 :D

Post by: Grim 82 on July 02, 2010, 04:04:46 pm
LOL. You feel about visors how I feel about running boards. Not proud to say it, but at one time my 82 had aluminum running boards with 4' blue strip lights on them.

Yup my p.o. put one hideous visor on and when he did he used 5 huge bolts!

How big of holes are you talking about?

you guys can be like everyone else and talk smack if you want, but I love em and put em on everything and everyone around here wants them too. I got a lighted moonvisor on my 88 and dad has the unlighted on his 84, he has stick on scoops, tube grille, I have a billet one, I'd have the razorback posted above, or a roll bar anyday. Hate on em if you want but we love em and put em on everything.

Here's one for all you hataz.....

If you have access to a welder than you should weld up those holes. Grind them somewhat smooth but not too thin, then take a body hammer and drift the high spots in so you can use a thin coat of bondo. MAKE SURE to cover your glass when you weld, and like Vile said, you will need to re-paint the roof.

Swims350, don't worry nobody is petitioning to ban visors. To each their own. Some like lifted, some like lowered, etc. I personally don't care for a vehicle with a bunch of go-fast looking non-functioning plastic parts is all. That white shortbox is pretty sweet though.
Title: Re: that ugly visor
Post by: Swims350 on July 02, 2010, 09:01:49 pm
yea maybe on a PINK truck it aint so good but IMo front roll pans are ugly, very much so.

The billet, looks great, the wheels love em.

I think they already petitioned them out lol they are very hard to find now.

As for the white short box, that's my old mans truck. A visor is the first thing he buys other then wheels, and doing a nice shiney paintjob. Are for plastic parts, ahh the scoops are the rest is fiberglass. I get your point though. Some things I hate, some I like. Ground effects and flares, yea, running boards I hate, cab fairings/razorbacks, like em for sure, roll bars and such, body kits, ahh some, not most. To each his own for sure.

OK Vile I think that truck would have benefited from removing the oversize mirrors before the visor. I don't lust after them, but I do like the moon visor. Thats being said there are some trucks that would look better without on. As for the cab backs, running boards, and all the rest of the crap. They are just that, and look like crap too!

my buddy had a lifted one on his blazer and it being black and lifted with 38's it didn't look that back i think more cause it kind of blended with the black

LOL I actually like the big mirrors, but I like the small ones too.

we had a black 86 4x4 had a visor on it, it did blend quite well with the truck.

shoot fitz I need one of the light covers for mine, it's broke like the one in the middle of yours.

You should sell the visors on ebay or something.

Well ALL of thse visors look "COOL" compared to the one i had! it was some rounded lookin thing! oh and the batmobile wings he had those on at one time. They were in the back of the truck along with some running boards, fender flares, the original wheels and bumper. Scraped em all! the bumper was crushed and thats all i woulda kept. I posted in the 73-87 truck section about my freebie 92 burban and possibly a freebie 84 crew cab complete!!! cab was covered but left outside. interior is sweet! rebuilt 454 that was in the garage. cancer free. been sitting for about 5 years!

You should sell the visors on ebay or something.

I'm not a big fan of ebay. I can see it being usefull to buy/sell something extremely rare, but for common stuff (like a visor) I don't think it's worth the effort for the $$ you would make off of it. I sold a few things on there in the past in the shipping was a pain.
If anyone is in Mass and wants a free visor, they can come pick one up.

ohhh man I hate the curvy visors they are ugly for sure.

As for visors man are you kidding? I liked to never found one for my 88. My dad found his but it was some old stock stuff and paid $150 for it. He might want a lighted one, I can ask him, you wanna yank a light cover off one for me? I need one.

that's the same visor on both trucks I posted and the pink truck, what's the difference?

That truck is a hodgepodge 88-98 stepside bed, 73-80 front end with an 81-87 stryle front bumper, and a hood scoop from a dodge or ford aint it?
Title: Re: that ugly visor
Post by: bobcooter on July 04, 2010, 09:25:11 pm
The pink truck really would look good with some small mirrors. I think the bright color makes the big mirrors stand out more than a darker color would. Speaking of bolting plastic stuff on your truck, I saw a guy with a long bed one of our trucks the other day with the wing off of a Grand Am bolted to the roof backwards. It looked like a boomerang but at the same time for some reason it made me think of that monster truck that looks like a dog. It was definantely right up there with the purple Craigslist truck.

I like the big mirrors, but they don't go well with the clean look of your truck Vile. Smaller ones would be less noticeable is all.

I guess we all have our pet peeves on these trucks, personally I like the visors. But I think a Phantom grille is the worst thing you can do to one of these trucks, other than paint it pink........ just saying. ;)

The big shinny chrome mirrors are the reason I bought my truck! There cool! I like the classic factory look! There the only thing that looks good on the outside of mine..........lol.

LOL that was funny, I do have to admit sometimes I like phantoms but on the pink truck not a fan, that and the front roll pan, I actually think the visor made it look better and I like the big chrome mirrors.

I didn't paint it pink if you didn't get that already, nor did I put a visor on it. Nevertheless if it was pink with yellow polka dots I'd still rather drive around with that scheme over having a visor...just saying. ;)

whether or not everyone likes every single thing on it vile, it sure is a clean truck, and nice that you guys keep it in good shape and care enough to get one, fix it up, or at least keep it nice. A good find too if it was in that shape.

I dont like the look of the visor, Vile your pink truck is bad :( ( I would dirve it anyday ) so is the black one you turned into a swb, I like the phatom grill on most trucks but I am not big on the front roll pan. I dont like all the plastic add-ons, these trucks look nice and clean stock with a nice grill no need to add a bunch of junk to them

As long as its no jap/china man car

I was shocked when I read in Hemmings Motornews that the 2010 Nissan Altima used the most American labor and the most American made parts of any car produced that year.
It's not so easy anymore to say that 1 car is American and another car is foreign.

Anything that says "made in the USA" usually means "assembled mostly in the USA" although off topic here it's pretty funny when you can see clearly there is no genuine made in the USA anything anymore. I hate when people say buy American. What does that mean? American cheese?

Check the time and effort this dude took into smoothing his visor in. All that work though just for it to crack eventually.

Razorbacks.....man, that brings back high school memories for me (early 90's). 73-87's, 88-ups and S-10s all around town with those things, let alone the Fords and Dodges. The slotted aluminum box rails, ground effects that were ALWAYS wavy and ill-fitting, and usually not on lowered trucks making them look double-goofy. Oh yes, thems were the days. I wanted a Choochoo Customs body kit REALLY bad for my 81 2wd Jimmy. Almost had the cash saved for it too when I traded it in on an 88 Mustang GT :)  It was a truck kit though so I would have had to trim and blend it to make it work on my Jimmy. I tried looking for a web site for them but it appears they do not have one :(  The kit was pretty clean looking actually!

Let me stir things up...I love these old CK trucks...but I know I'm fixing junk by todays standards. I drive Chev's and Fords at work and they are crap cans, especially the F150's. At least the Silverados have go to them. If I had to buy a new truck, it would hands down be a Toyota. Second to that, it would be a Nissan. Better engineering and quality. And as far as I know Non-union made. Unions have done nothing but driven costs up and made people lazy in both our countries. On top of that, the big 3's CEO's slash quality for profit (in thier pockets)...its a sell out. Corporate greed...where's the dedication? It became about lining thier own pockets, selling us substandard products and then admitting it when they are begging for a bailout. Dont get me started about Walmart, dollar stores and all the other big box stores that implemented the need to import from overseas....consumers brought this on.

As for the visor, my truck is going retro. Maybe a wrangler paint scheme. Fads come and go, classic is timeless.

ssshhheeeeewwweee, that's one ugly molded in visor. I hate the little curvy ones. I love his hood, but hate the chop top, imo chop top looks funny on these trucks I don't like it at all.

If I were to buy a brand new truck it would be the new GMC baby. The Toyota isn't too bad but they ride like a bucket of bolts and are plagued with their own issues as well.
Title: Re: that ugly visor
Post by: bobcooter on July 08, 2010, 09:32:25 pm
I don't know how many of you guys keep up with NASCAR, but when they allowed Toyota in a couple or three years ago, a lot of people started moaning and complaining about Jap cars and it should stay the Big 3, it was un-American and all that. Turns out the Toyos are the most Ameican built car on the track. They build all the Camrys in Kentucky! Anyway, why would you want to put a visor on a go-fast truck anyway?

IMO visors have a place, like others have said not on a go fast truck. I think visors look cool on a 3/4 or 1 ton made for hauling and pulling but if you have the visor you gotta have the cab lights too. It makes the truck look like a mini big rig.
