Title: 1979 k10 transformation.....HELP NEEDED....
Post by: lpapa15 on July 06, 2010, 10:36:55 am
I am parting out a 83 c20 and adding it to a 79 k10.  I want to upgrade to power windows, doors by using the doors on the c20.  Will they fit with the exterior molding?  How hard would it be to upgrade to power doors?  Please give me suggestions.  Also I want to use the entire interior of the c20.   All electrical, AC, dash etc..   Do you have any suggestions on how that will work?  Please send me advice....

it should all work fine for you, I had an 81 with no power, I got doors of an 86 with all the power locks and windows. Every thing went in very easy, you will need the wiring harness out of the donor truck, up near the gas pedal is a relay for the windows you will need this to make everything work. I didnt know about the relay when I did mine, it took me a couple hours to relize what was missing and I had to go back to the guy I bought everything from and find the relay. The install is pretty easy you will have to drill a hole in the door jams on both sides for the wires to go through, do this with the doors off and drill it in-between the two hinges and you will have to pull the kick panels to run the harness but they will go back on when your done. Good luck with it and if you need more help send me a e-mail

Sorry forgot about the rest, the int. trim will fit fine, are you talking about the dash pad or the whole metal dash, if just the pad I dont think it will fit right since they changed to dash a little bit but if you are wanting to switch the whole metal dash then that should work since the size is the same ( someone correct me if I am wrong ) from what I have been told, I was thinking of putting an earlier dash in mine ( I like the way they curve in at the cluster ). What are you doing with the old dash, I might be interested in getting it from you if you are getting rid of it, not sure yet what way I want to go. If you are switching dashes then all your a/c stuff should go right in, hope this helps ya

The dashes are the same all the way through the years. The only thing that changed was the gage cluster / gages, the way they were inputed . like mechanical oil PSI vs. electrical, Factory tach. or no tach., clock, etc. Physically they are all the same. Non AC cab firewall hole for the heater box is different from an AC cab firewall. They will not interchange directly. You will have to do some metal work / cutting, welding to make the AC heater box fit.
Not sure what you mean by exterior molding???
The doors are a little different over the years and non power, and power. However they will bolt onto any 73-87 Chevy truck. If you look on your cab you will see two little dimples. They are where you drill for the screws to attach the power door harness boot. Then make a larger hole approx. 1" if I remember correctly in between them for the harness to pass through. Then run it up under the dash along with the other original wiring. Down to the fuse box where it plugs in to the face of the fuse box.
As far as electrical you will find that although very similar the 79's wire harness will not be identical to the 83's. Why do you need to swap the wire harness / electrical?

If you read the post about dashes it even says there that the earlier dash pads curve in at the gauges and how the end is a little bit different where the trim is, so yes the dash does change a little through the years, yes you will do some cutting for the a/c box in the firewall but you shouldnt have to weld anything, it is an easy job to install if you know alittle about metal work and as long as the hole you drill for the harness is big enough to fit the plug end through then the size dont have to be exact

The dash PAD is what's different. 73-78 no vin window 79-80 has the vin window, 81-87 (91) are the same. The dash bezels are different also from 73-91 with many changes including wiper switch, mounting contour, radio, a/c etc

When I say they are the same I mean the metal stamp is the same except the movement of wiper / light switch. The basic metal is the same shape.

Your 83 dash is the same as the 79 one you got.(metal) In 84 they changed the dash as they went to the wiper switch on the column as from 83 down on the dash by the headlight switch.

thanks
