Title: trouble with identifying my 350
Post by: timradzik on July 19, 2010, 10:08:36 pm
i have a 1980 chevy c 10 4x4 with a 350. i am looking to do an engine swap. i have two questions. 1. how many year difference can i go with from the original motor. example if i pull an engine from a 73 chevy c 10 or gmc. 2. is the 350 engine that is mated to a tmh350 transmission a 2 or 4 bolt? if anyone can help me out it would be appreciated.

C10 4x4 ??? something aint right but if its a k10 more than likely its just a 2 bolt main the only way to tell that I know of is pull the pan off. What trans it’s mounted to don’t mean anything. You can use any motor just the dip stick changes in the older years from passenger side to driver’s side

you could basically use any engine in your truck up to now really. the old school blocks up to the 90's bolt up, stock and then the ls1 type engines and such have adapter plates. SO if that's what you wonder basically anything, but to give you a guestimate, up to 98 chevy or gmc 2wd or 4x4. 86 and up use a 1 piece rear main seal, so make sure to use a flywheel/flexplate that goes with the motor, or buy one that fits it.

You could go way back as well, almost to the start pretty much of chevy v8 like around the 50's 60's or something. As mentioned the oil dipstick switches sides but there's no worries there, they'll physically bolt up, the newer block though some cannot use the block mounted fuel pump. You can make it work though, with electric pumps or something, so basically you are limited only by your skills and what you want or are willing to change. As for an almost direct bolt in drop in deal, I'd say 73-87 or even older, like maybe to 67 or so.

I'm not really up on it, but didn't the heads get drilled differently for accessories on later motors?  Not sure if that's tbi heads or vortec era stuff.

I aint really sure myself I got an 88 tbi motor and I THINK all the holes are there for the older style accessories. If not then convert to serp. or use the newer bracket setup maybe.

Holes are the same on TBI trucks.

If they have bolts they are the same. Older double hump / heads didn't have bolt holes at all. But they are all interchangeable
