Title: fuel pump
Post by: bigfosty on July 20, 2010, 01:49:46 am
Is there some magic trick to putitng a fuel pump on? I cannot get this thing on. As I slide it in the "rod" coming off the fuel pump slides up the pushrod and causes the bolts to not line up with the holes. They are about a quarter inch above the holes. Is there some trick I am missing? Thanks for any help.

P.S.- It's a 1975 K-10, 350, 4 barrel, three line pump.

Almost sounds like the lobe on the cam is in the lift, pushing the push rod into the pump "suction" and you are trying to put yours in while it’s at its rest state

Apparently you have to move the pushrod to slide the pump in. Nowhere in my haynes did it say this. All my friends are mopar guys and their pumps run directly off the cam so the info they were giving me didn't help. I slid the pushrod up and slipped the pump on and it went on.

P.S.- I am a very novice mechanic if you couldn't tell.

If you think the pump lope is preventing it from going in, turn the engine over some.
Generally I have just lubed the rod with assembly grease to stick it in there and then muscled it in.

I'm with Chris that's how I do em, that is if you had the plate off to pull the rod, sometimes I've got lucky and slid it up in place and it stayed there. I would think it making it to high to line up the arm/lever on back of the pump to be on top of the pushrod for it, making it too high. So if all else fails remove the plate, pull the rod, grease the end and shove it in place, put on your new plate and gasket, then install the pump.

You can also remove the bolt in the front of the engine and install a longer bolt to hold the pushrod in place. Just don't forget to take it out and put the original one back in.

I just used a small screwdriver, like the kind you would use on glasses and pushed the rod back in, then held it there and slid the fuel pump in. My problem was I didn't realize the pushrod moved, the way people were explaing it to me I thought it spun, obviously I and they were wrong.

I had heard this vile but I've have a few small blocks and they had no bolt in there at all. Only the lower hole and was usually a ground wire hookup.
