Hey guys, my name is Mike, this is my '80 C10 I have had for about a month. I have owned lots of cars and still do but have always wanted a short bed 2wd hot rod since I was in high school. The one I got rid of for this was an 87 K5 Blazer on 1 tons. I work on BMW's for a living, and have owned mostly nothing but VW's. My current stable counting the C10 includes a 2006 VW Jetta GLI with tons of mods and is about 280Ftlbs at the wheels on crappy california 91, and a 2009 BMW 328I sport package coupe my wife drives.
Truck has a mild 350, not sure whats in it. Has an Elgin cam that thumps a little, an edelbrock intake and carb. Runs like a champ. I just did a dual stainless exhaust with x pipe and two Magnaflows dumped behind the rear axle. I will be putting headers on it here soon. It has a 12 bolt rear axle and an SM465 trans. It was originally a "heavy half ton" appearently from the VIN. Its lowered, with spindles up front and axle flip in the back. Drip rails and trim have been shaved.
I spit the driveshaft out on monday when the rear U-Joint let go, so I had that rebuilt and put it in last night, this weekend I have to change the valve that switches between tanks since it leaks gas. I also got rid of the crappy aftermarket pepboys steering wheel and put on a wheel from a 91 Suburban. My immediate plans are to get rid of the 90's era fake Boyd wheels for some OG Rally wheels or torque thrusts. Not sure on size though. Will 10" fit out back? Size, I wanna stick with 15 since rubber is pretty cheap. I plan on redoing the interior, and building the 388 kit from summit that came in the box. I have a line on a T56 6 speed out of a GTO, but not sure how hard or expensive it will be to swap. My plans are for a clean stockish OEM looking truck rather than street custom. So here is a pic. I will have more tonight but this is it for now.

Welcome. That is a sweet truck.
-
Welcome aboard. Nice clean truck. How does it feel to be driving something other than Eurotrash? :P
-
Beautiful truck and yes, 10's will fit in the back.
-
Awesome truck! Be sure to post up more pics!!
-
I dumped my A4 so I could have real fun in an old chevy truck. I look back with no regrets.
The 6-speed swap shouldn't be too hard. without much research; You'll probably need to convert to a hydraulic clutch, make a new crossmember for the trans, cut a new hole for the shifter a little closer to the seat and gey a new driveshaft made or the one you have modified, considering the same for mine except with a t5 or nv4500. not sure what you'll need to do for a speedometer but maybe someone here can point you in the right direction. welcome and nice truck.
-
That is super nice.
-
That is a sick ride!
-
Very nice truck indeed. Welcome to the site.
-
kind of looks like the truck in the ad at the top of the page.
-
Very nice truck! Stick with the 15" tires. They are classic and the taller wheels look crappy of these trucks. Just my 2cents.
-
Welcome from NW Indiana
-
Needs round headlights...
-
I 2nd the round headlights. Easy swap. I have a pic of my 80 with the round lights-if you would like me to post it let me know.
-
Round headlights x 3!
-
Needs round headlights...
+1
-
+2 and x 4 on the round lights, great looking truck but not a fan of square lights period much less the 80 model ones everything else I love.
-
Nice truck!
The t56 is going to be expensive to match up to an early SBC.
-
Welcome from Maryland. Great looking truck!
-
Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
Yeah, I'm not sold on the square lights either guys. I like it since you never see another one, but on the otherhand, that may be for a reason. I will likely back date it to the round ones. All it takes is the 79 trim pieces, round buckets and bulbs right?
I'm still waiting to get to check out a set of 15x10 and 15x8 rallys when the guy gets back in town, have to mount the rear bumper, and replace that leaking valve for switching tanks. Take it back to get headers, make the oil pressure and temp senders work. I will pull the cluster, clean up the lens, do the LED swap, and paint the whole bezel piece since a new one is so much.
Then i got to figure out how to set mixture and timing to take advantage of my new exhaust and headers after ditching the factory exhaust and manifolds........... F*&%! I'm a fuel injection guy and do my monkeying with a lap top. No such luck here. Much respect to you guys that know how to do it. The only carbs I messed with were Solex's and Webers on old VW's...
Any of you guys wanna take a stab at what gears this thing likely has?
-
Edelbrocks are as easy as pie to monkey around with. Grab a calibration kit (which will come with an assortment of jets, needles, springs), a few airhorn gaskets, and get cracking.
-
Yeah man thats a killer truck...More Pix!!! More Pix!!!
-
Cool I will give the carb a good tinkering, for better or worse.
Here are some more pics my buddy shot last thursday. Sorry I can't post them up his stuff is protected from being reused but you can see on the links... I HATE those wheels with a passion. Not for me.

Sweet pics. That truck is primo! And I agree with you on the wheels, a set of Coy's C-5 would be nice.
As far as the carb goes, if you don't already have the owners manual, it's a useful tuning guide:

you'll just need new bezels and lights for a non silverado for 1980; square headlights were an option for 1980. Also I had to replace my dash lens due to "yellowing" I couldn't clean or polish it off but the new lense made a world of difference. when you have the lense off-hold a white rag behind it-you'll be able to see if its clean a lot easier. Do you have interior pics?
-
That edelbrock manual is now bookmarked! thanks that will help for sure.
As far as the lights, who makes better repop pieces, or Classic industries?
I have no interior pics since its kinda trashed. The seat is ok and so is the carpet, but the dash is done, instrument cluster bezel and vents the "chrome" is worn away, the headliner needs to be redone and the door panels are trash. They are white. the truck was originaly black with a whiteish interior im guessing. The guy I got it from, bought it from his dads friend who was the original owner. Bottom of the dash is still black. I did replace the tiny 13" GT wheel with a 4 spoke one off a 91 suburban though.
Who makes repop door panels that I can reuse the big metal insert and trim that goes on it? I will get some pics of the inside this weekend.
-
this site has a lot of the interior pieces you are looking for or they can point you in the right direction for all parts (link at the top of the page.) Door panels are easily painted/dyed and will look good (if not cracked or broken). mine were pretty rough but I was able to save them. What color are you going to make the interior?
-
I want to keep the gray interior, seat was redone in gray and is good, so is the carpet, Bottom of the dash is still black. If I had the cash to redo it all, I would do a dark saddle tan, or black. I will check the site for door panels. I like the metal inserts but it seems repops do not reuse this piece and I would have to do some creative painting. My door panels are DONE. All cracked and broken. What EVER possessed GM to install white seat belts and door panels in a truck (or anything) is beyond me!

Well, I figured out why I have no oil pressure on the gauge..................... Everyone said it was down by the dizzy, but I couldn't see it. Found the wire and followed it, behind the brake booster.......

I'm guessing it goes here where the plug on the block is. My question, and worry is, why the heck would someone NOT install it.........

I also noticed, the primaries open 3/4 of the way, and the choke plate is missing. There is a set of throttle plates with weights on them in the secondary bore, are these supposed to attatch to something that opens them? Or does the vacuum of having the secondaries open pull them open? I have no clue. How do you adjust the throttle cable? the cable doesn't look adjustable on the carb end, unless it is supposed to be in the hole closer to the front of the motor on the linkage?

and here are some interior pics. Door panels MUST go! Steering wheel is alot better though.

well from what I've seen that does go behind the dizzy, in the block itself there's a spot which has to be plugged off on yours. You're gonna need to remove the big bulb from the other part and thread the other part into the block first with thread sealer or teflon tape on it, then do the same on the bubl and put it into the fitting. I'd buy a new bubl though, that one might not work. That or buy an aftermarket oil pressure gauge. As for the secondaries in the edelbrock carb they have some flaps in bottom that open and those in top just lay in there, I found it hard to beleive myself when I rebuilt one a couple years ago that it just laid in there, but I guess vacuum of the bottom flaps being open, opens them, I think you can move them by hand though, but might have to hold the throttle open to do so I forget.

Ok, update. Finally got that leaking fuel tank switching valve fixed with a new AC Delco part, installed my oil pressure sending unit, installed my rear bumper, diagnosed my inop temp gauge as a defective gauge in the cluster. I got a set of wheels Rally wheels 15x8 front, 15x10 rear. I'm holding off on tires since my front suspension is TRASHED. The front of the lower arms are bent and ground up, all the way to the washer and bushing, so I will be buying new upper and lower arms instead of tires. Last owner looks like he must have been a Dukes of Hazzard fan by the rash on everything. Now I can take it back to get the headers built since its not dripping gas........

Got my wheels on finally. I reused my front tires since the A arms are trashed, no sense in buying new rubber. Not much else has been done. I have been busy with work. I will get the headers done next week, all the guys were busy with SEMA stuff and now that stuff is slowing back down a little, I will get it in. Truck is getting sidelined unfortunately, but I'm doing little stuff here and there until I can get going on the motor. The interior should be addressed next, then I can work on building that 388.
15x8 front 245/60/15
15x10 rear 295/50/15
