Title: headlight size
Post by: thachevythang on August 04, 2010, 06:33:10 pm
Do 4x6 headlights fit on an '85. I found a cheap HID projector kit for $80 but not sure of the size that will fit in our dual headlight trucks. Its a complete kit with 4 headlamps for high and low. Only thing is that the high beams have to be converted to the low beam connection but is included with the kit. any help is appreciated!

Could you measure your headlights?

Anything is possible, with a little fabrication.

I'm out of town on business and wont be back for another week, so thats why I ask. I'm just wondering if they will fit with the OE mounts and bezels.

Might fit, but as I've said 20 times before, if its an HID kit and less than $2000, its a glare box. Fine for an ATV that never sees the road, but it'll only blind oncoming traffic, and give you a false sense of seeing further.

As another thing to consider, even beneficial alterations to headlights are illegal in all 50 states in the US. While replacing your headlights with sylvania silverstars, or using the standard halogen replaceable bulb housings with silverstar bulbs won't attract attention, since when properly aimed like any headlight, they ARE a proven positive, safe performer, throwing glare all over the road with a cheap HID kit is a sure way to a ticket, much like running around with 6 sets of driving lights on.

Saw a car with LED headlights tonight.  Very white but no distance and just a lot of glare.

If you run HID with projectors, you wont get glare as long as they are aimed properly.

Thats the catch, proper projectors are NOT cheap, even with mass production being more commonplace. No two vehicles are the same when it comes to projector placement and alignment, therefore each light must be custom made for each vehicle. Not just each model, since the lens in the projector housing, as well as the housing shape itself, comes into play with the alignment, and they are NOT adjustable, a truck or suv will need a totally different lens than a car. You can aim a projector headlight, but you can't adjust the lens or housing focus, all you're doing is adjusting the whole housing direction to point the light. So, a 4x6" housing made for a car, will not be properly designed for a truck with a 4" lift, for example.

There are companies that offer custom made HID projector housings for anything that accepts any size of sealed headlight, but the cost is usually $1200-$1600 per housing, and the request forms need to know detailed measurements down to millimeters, and once installed, you can never alter ride height, tire size, etc, without replacing the housings.

Ever had a new cadillac or lexus cruising toward you at night, and been blinded almost entirely by their HID projectors? Chances are, they've replaced SOMETHING with something other than stock. Tires, wheels, suspension, it doesn't matter what it is, the tiniest alteration will make that HID lighting system dumpster worthy. Most of the cars that come factory with HIDs also either tell you in the fine print of their owners manual, to always distribute loads evenly front to back, side to side, OR, they have built in load leveling suspensions.

Hey Wolf, can you send some of those headlight tickets to SW Indiana?  I drive a low-riding car most of the time and those poorly aimed headlights and "driving" lights are murder on my eyes!
