Howdy all,
I purchased a 1974 Longbed C10 from a coworker a week ago for $800. He's had it 4 years and its had a rod-bearing knock the entire time. He has put about 8000 miles on it since he's had it. Truck allegedly has 78,000 original miles on it. Belonged to a farmer. Some surface rust here and there and a couple places that beg for patch panels (the usual places from what I can tell). 2 barrel 350 with a Turbo 350 tranny and I think a 3.73 rear end.
This is my first ever truck. I got quite a few quizzical looks from family and friends when I bought it. My trusted mechanic and my father both asked me the same question... "What are you buying a 1974 beat up truck for?" My answer was as follows: 1) I just sold my motorcycle and I need a third vehicle as a back up. 2) I could sure use a truck for Home Depot runs and for loads a firewood from time to time 3) Any third vehicle needed to be cheap and simple to work on should it need to go into the shop for something (as compared to my 96 Maxima and my 02 Civic) - 4) It needed to be simple enough to work on that I could start to learn to do some stuff myself. The extent of my automotive know-how was pushed to the limit when I put brake pads on my motorcycle before I sold it... so needless to say, not only am I a newbie to these trucks, I'm a TOTAL newbie shade-tree mechanic.
So... there ya have it. I had a brief relationship with another 74 Chevy Truck back in high school as a cousin had one and we got into ALL sorts of trouble in it. So it seemed like a perfect match when my buddy decided to sell me this one.
