It's the same length and it'll bolt right in, assuming you mean a 73-87 stepside bed and not one from something else.

73-87 beds will fit any trucks pretty much bolt on in those year ranges, as long as it short bed to short bed. The only thing to look out for is the gas fillers. A lot of step sides came with a single gas tank, if you have dual you will have to fab one for the drivers side or rob parts out of a parts truck. I am taking a 74 step side and putting it on a 81 with dual tanks, already have almost all the things i need to fab the drivers side. I like to have doors on my gas cap and filler area.

Blake has a point.
I cant find the rubber gas filler tubes for my stepside. I have one "custom" made that I did a few years ago on the PS, and now I need to do the same for my DS. Im just waiting for gas to spill out of the cracks. I know goodyear makes different sizes and bends, I just need to get my butt out and figure something out. Boat suppliers might be a possible solution as well. They carry large diameter rubber.
My stepside has gas doors as well and I will have to cut out the door when I get around to replacing my fender, unless a miracle happens and I come across someone parting a PS fender with door.
There was another option, more popular, with the gas cap exposed. Ugly IMO.
