Title: wrong starter/flexplate combo?
Post by: screamin86 on August 24, 2010, 03:27:42 pm
Well I've had a bunch of little issues with my truck since I got it back together in march but I've got them all straightend out now except one. This is the first 2pc rms motor I've ever ran in any of my vehicles and I used a new starter that I had that some one gave me years ago on trade. I also used this starter for a few hundred miles on the old 305 and never had an issue. The first 700-800miles with the new motor the starter was always very loud like it needed shimmed so I did and it did not help and eventualy it started grinding and carrying on and eventualy would not catch any more. I swaped it for the original starter that was on the truck when I got it and I had to put a new noid on it and it worked great....well it sat for a week or two recently for the head/intake swap I did and once I got it back together and went to fire it up the starter would not catch or would and turn it over then not catch and grind. I've looked at the flexplate and it looks to be in good shape and I started thinking is it possible that I have the wrong count tooth flexplate for the starters I'm using?

Maybe the new solenoid is bad not kicking the gear out and not kicking it out fast enough

I agree with Irish, if your solenoid is going out or just isn't getting enough power, the gear will not spin out fast enough to mate with the flex plate and if not fully engaged with the flex plate, it will bind up.  Have someone kick it over a couple of times and if you can see, look under truck to see if it is popping out all the way and making good contact with the flex plate.   Tom

Ill try to see what I can do once it stops raining here and if I get some free time. In the process of closing on a house and I've been workin 60-70hrs on second shift and a 2yr old keeps me busy lmao. I have noticed that when I get in to crank it its barely reading over 8 on my volts gauge. It has a brand new batt and one wire alt that I put on at the time of the head swap.
